currently have an eclipse 8444 in the dash of my car. currently shopping for a 97-03 GP GTP. i know to use the steering wheel controls i will need an interface controller. but get confused when i go looking at them. any help on which one i would need if i go that route? not totally sure i would need/use the controls on the wheel, but if it was not a big deal to do then i might consider it. heck i have a remote i do not use.

secondly. while i do love the 5volt out and the clarity of the signal...i am not totally sold on this 8444. i hate the fact there is no pause, the buttons are showing wear fast. had it less than 2 years now and by the 1 year mark the buttons were showing wear. what i am thinking about for the new car is out of my realm of knowledge/info. i am considering video in the new car. not sure if it would be 1 or multiples. if it will be small or large or a combo. i also have an 80 gig ipod that i would love to use in the car as well. right now i can use it just fine (just have to use the line in on the 8444), but i was told some of the new HU's and some of the in dash screens offer full control of the ipod. with Jensen being the latest in the game with a touch screen in dash that you plug the ipod into and control the ipod on the touch screen. can any one verify that as well as anyone know if there are any others that can do this?
i am not looking to permanently mount the ipod in the car. as i use it while at work, while riding my bike, while killing time at places i am not too excited to be at. neat is also how the inside of the car will be. so nothing thicking out with the ipod mounted to it either.

thanx

as for getting high end that is my preference. as i am kinda picky about having lots of features to allow for more options to grow with.

the current eclipse i have was at the high end the year before i got it. hard to pass the price even though the new one had more things.
before that i always had the high end excelon decks. my first clarion is the only one that has not been at the top of the food chain.
as for drivers. diamond audio hex and eclipse alum. hex being about 8 yrs old now and the alum is about 5. PPI art amp for the hex's. standard issue class d for the alum. with audio control processing.
so yes i do want to reside towards the top if possible.

will shout at wes see if i can get a go through on it sometime.

thanx

i'd suggest the clarion MAX675VD for you to look at....its really good quality for the price!

I'll 2nd that. Weshole has one in his Miata that I'm sure he'd demo for you. Sweet-WRX-Lovin is getting one in his STi soon, I'll have one before year end.

If you are interested in purchasing a clarion piece, let me know and I can get you a price. If you decide to go Alpine (and I can't say I'd blame anyone their decks are nice) I'd recommend Team, I'm sure Troy would be happy to demo one for you as well.

I believe they were the first to have a full speed Ipod connection, and now all their head units have it. Also I'd have to vote Alpine on ease of use, but then again I don't have near as much experience w/ a lot of other brands.

For your steering wheel controls, look at Peripheral's website. They make a nice module that will plug right into the head unit as long as your Eclipse has that capability.

my first cd player was a clarion. but eventually it passed on. next few years i had several kenwoods excelons as i loved the user interface more and the 4volt out.
when the last one died a couple years ago. i hated the cheap look and feel of the kenwoods so i looked elsewhere. ended up with a carryover eclipse. as i was not competing SPL anymore i did not mind no pause button. but i do miss it as time goes on. no complaints on the quality of the signal or sound from it, but i am just wanting more with the new car planned.
who all is running a clarion now that i could check out in person?
JVC/ Panasonic do not interest me.
Alpine i think are overpriced
Pioneer do not have anything good or bad to say. they are what they are.
Kenwood seems to have went cheap with the build quality. the last ones i played with in store had to much extra movement in the fold down screen for my liking.
i am game to look at clarion
not sure i would do eclipse again though.
simple setup in the audio dept for me.
HU-external crossover-stage amp-sub amp-components up front-single sub out back.
so a single line out with high voltage is all i really need. i like the KISS philosophy. keep it simple stupid.

will start another thread asking about screens.

PERSONALLY I love the Clarions since they have 3 pairs of 6 Volt Pre-Outs on their high end screens. The Kenwood only has 2 volt preouts (BLEH!!!!!) as does the Panasonic...really disappointing in this day and age....

JVC has a 5 volt output on their Arsenal decks, which is nice, but overall I'd say no one...not even Alpine/Eclipse/Pioneer can touch Clarion for price/quality/ease of use. NO ONE.

Clarion has a direct interface available that utilizes your steering wheel buttons as well and is pretty plug and play. I'm sure others do to, but honestly, I don't ever see myself pushing any other brand than Clarion when it comes to decks.

..as far as the controls on the steering wheel....they usually make wiring kits for that
