I believe anyway, I haven't pulled any spark plugs, any valve covers, I haven't taken a close look at it, but I want to see what you guys think.

I bought it without a timing belt so I ASSUME the valves are bent because of the pistons possibly hitting them? Anyone know how complicated or "involved" a valve job would be?

What would be an easy way to figure out of the valves were bent without actually pulling the heads just yet? BTW, I'll have pictures in member's rides when I find my digital camera.

I could bring it into Valley imports to have them do a timing job, but not only is that 900 dollars, I also have reason to believe that a rod bearing has gone out...when I tried to crank over the engine, I can hear the rod moving on the crankshaft...1100 dollars and I can have a new engine with 78,000 miles on it and that way for the new owner some day, they won't have to worry about any serious trouble with the car.

Alright, so now I'm convinced the gas station guys fucked everything up.

I went and talked to Valley imports today about finding a timing mark to line the camshafts up to. They said and I quote, "All you have to do with the cam's is line up the two bigger holes on the oblong retainers on the outside of the camshafts, and get the crankshaft to TDC, you'll be set. Put on your tensioner pulley, and harmonic balancer, and your set to go."

I did exactly that, and ended up right where I was before. The idiots at the station screwed everything up. They put the retainers on wrong and the only way for me to fix it is to go out and spend another 350 on a tool I'll use ONCE and it'll be fixed. Or, I can rotate the shaft 180 degrees and it'll be set.

After I put everything back on, I was WAY low on compression. Before I messed with anything, I had 150 psi's of compression and after I put everything back together, I had 20 psi's. A little less than perfect if you ask me.

Now, I have two options:

Take everything back apart, rotate the shafts 180 degrees and not care what the retainers are doing...

Take it to Valley imports, have them make everything the way the factory did it and spend another 900 dollars to do it.

I'm willing to take everything apart once more...I only paid a grand for the car.

Joel, I'll probably give you a call tomorrow.

I went over there late last night because I think I found out what happened.

When the original owners brought it to a gas station to see what was up, they did a quick "timing job" well, that really screwed up the engine because not only was the Harmonic balancer off from tdc, the cam timing was completely 180 degrees off. I went and took everything apart yesterday and took off the timing belt and am now currently working on getting the driver's side cam timed. I have the pax side done. Hopefully I'll have it running by the end of tomorrow.

What a complete set of dumbass's on the gas stations part...I hate idiots.

Not sure if it has plug wires but if it does could you possibly have mixed 2 wires up? Sounds a lot like the symptoms my car had when we did the cam swap and hooked up wire #8 to plug #7 and wire #7 to plug #8.

I got to the shop today and began working right away. It was an awesome day today and I figured shit was going my way. Turned out it did, and half didn't at the same time. I got the fucker to turn over and run.

First, I pulled all the plugs finally and tried to turn the engine over by putting a breaker bar on the crankshaft. That went over well and worked like a charm. The Cams were turning with the crankshaft so I figured everything was just fine. Looking at the plugs, I figured it was time to change them out. So I went out and bought new plugs along with a compression tester. Also, I found out that the battery was dead so I replaced that. After I got all that replaced, Compression in all the cylinders was anywhere from 120 to 150 psi's all around. Yay! All valves are seating and piston rings aren't fried.

After I got everything put back together, plugs installed, plug wires, valve covers, various sensors and what not..., I cranked her over a few times, and she started right up.

Bad news: Has a hard core top end knock. Shit, the timing's off right? I'm going to have to pull the timing belt off, and re-time it aren't I? And if that isn't the case, is there ANYTHING else that could be wrong with it?

Symptoms: Top end knock, rough idle...actually those are the only two symptoms I have...

Any help is supremely appreciated.

Turns out the timing belt is STILL ON and in good condition so I believe that the whole bent valve thing is totally fake. I'm thinking maybe the starter is bad, or the battery is dead beyond charging.

When I was in the junk yard with it, without thinking I hooked up a jump box to it and tried to crank it over. The starter clicked once, but didn't do anything after that. I thought to try it again, this time the starter didn't click at all. Is there any possible way that the starter or the battery could be the problem?

I can't completely rule out the valves being screwed because I wasn't able to turn the engine over, mostly because I was stupid and didn't realize that the plugs were still in...go figure stupid me, so I wasn't able to crank it over which I intend on doing first thing tomorrow morning.

Still no pictures...went straight to the shop after work. Anyway, let me know any and I mean ANY POSSIBLE problems that could be wrong. If it's what I'm thinking, I could have the car done by friday, and we should go on a cruise so I can test the car out and make sure everything is running properly

Yep, that's where I was going to start and if that didn't help enough, I was just going to take the valve cover's off and then the heads after that. I haven't decided if I want to rebuild the old heads with more a more heavy duty valve train yet or just get new heads that are pre-built. I'd like to just get it driveable first and then see about getting it into low 13's sometime next summer. Like I said...we'll see...
