The point I'd like to bring up is if this change does occur there had better be some follow up actions. As already mentioned and businesses using the name "Sioux" should be forced to change their name, as well as all of the textbooks in circulation. I know the vast majority of texts that I read during school did not refer to the Lakota (sorry if I spelled that wrong) but they did to the Sioux. This cannot be an isolated incident. If the Lakota are truly in support of this change (which I support them if they are) then it needs to be a overall change. Their tribe needs to be in favor of "eradicating" that term from any facet of education/business/culture. If they are not willing to stand up and make this form of a sweeping change then the matter needs to be looked into further. There will have to massive amounts of government funding to help with this as well. This would be a massive financial expenditure to change countless names and advertising material alone, not to mention the editing, reprinting and restocking of textbooks.

Like I've said before if this is a term that is truly offensive then it needs to be stopped. I had never heard of the "little snake" connotation of the word. I do think that likening the word Sioux to derogatory terms used against African Americans is a little excessive, but I can see how the reference can be used to draw attention to the case.

This could create an up-roar with natives who may go to the tribe council and complain...
Since many agree the name should stay, including natives, I think UND should let it be known that this may be an outcome.. People losing a benefit or having to pay more money usually gets people a little ambitious to give an opinion. And show which way they support. Unless UND has a contract on these benefits...

If my grandpa can go from eating lard and bread sandwiches, going to school till the 4th grade, and being dirt poor as a kid to owning several businesses and being able to carry enough cash in his wallet to buy the best caddies and chryslers money could buy back in the day, anyone can. It's just people nowdays are usually too fucking lazy to go work their asses off to get somewheres in life, cuz our society doesnt push it, they just know the govt will give them what they need to get by.

funny thing is, they say in a couple of years, whites are going to be the minority to people of african american, latin, and asian, and arabic descent. and i guarantee when that happens(we all know it will), nothing will change, and people will still expect handouts because they USED to be the minority..... :icon_shaking:

I say UND should cut off all of their special treatment for the tribe's students and make them pay for a new arena if they want them to change their name.
