That is why i have never financed anything and i save till i can afford it. I just think it is stupid to assume ppl are "not intellegent" because they drive luxury SUVs. And that could go the same way for Audis, they are considered luxury so i should assume that you financed it and are "not intellegent" even though that isn't the case. Im simply saying that most ppl that i know with luxury vehicles can easily afford them (although i do agree many ppl spend beyond what they should also), and that most ppl finance newer vehicles so you are saying most ppl are stupid.

Well, I do drive a brand new Audi that I own outright, but it's only a lowly A4. However, it gets great gas mileage and does extremely well in crash testing... features absent from most SUVs, luxury or otherwise. I assure you that I didn't get a station wagon with a manual transmission to improve my image, although I do happen to think it looks nice.

I got the base model engine because it has "adequate" performance for a family car, and because I wanted the great mileage and cost savings more than I wanted the high cost and poor mileage of an S4.

Well, a financed luxury SUV says a few things to me

person is dumb enough to buy an SUV when they can clearly afford better options

person borrows money to buy luxury goods, indicating a financial outlook that is somewhat more irresponsible than what I personally feel comfortable with.

Well, you said it, not me.

In any case, paying interest to borrow money to purchase a depreciating asset is kind of a poor move.

Luxury cars, by definition, are "luxury" items and are beyond the justifiable needs of most people. It's fine for people to buy nice cars if they can afford them. When they need to borrow money to do so, that seems a little strange to me.

Should the guy that needs a reliable way to get to work to feed his family finance a reliable car if that's the only way he can get one? Sure. Should he finance a luxury car for "only" $100/mo more? Probably not.

The thread was about what your reactions to seeing different types of vehicles are. These are mine, and they're obviously prejudicial generalizations, not well-considered assessments made on a case-by-case basis.

I stand by my generalization, however -- most people in SUVs bought a stupid vehicle and paid too much for it, in many cases needing to borrow money just to get the thing.

I should also allow for the possibility that otherwise reasonable and intelligent people make stupid or emotionally justified decisons.
