they've changed the engine spec twice and in all cases its been 3.5L, but different heads, cams, tuning, etc keep getting more power and top end out of it. The same motor in the Infinity G class will apparently wind into the 7000s.

i drove the 350z when it first came out several years ago. My impression at the time was that the VQ35 engine was a truck motor (which it is -- it's used across the nissan family of vehicles). It ran out of breath before hitting the redline. it had strong midrange torque but didn't pull hard to the limiter. I also think that we drove the car pretty hard and it stank like hell by the time we were done with it.

The S30 is the best looking Z car ever made, IMO. The Z31 is kind of an ugly duckling, the Z32 is absolutely beautiful, and for its day was a worthy competitor to the FD and the JZA80. I think the Z32 twin turbo in black is probably the sweet spot of the Z lineup. Good daily driver, huge power potential..

The Z33 just doesn't do it for me. I hear that the newer ones have an improved engine and anecdotally, it pulls harder in the upper register than the original motor did, so I might give it another shake.

this newer 350Z you speak of with an improved engine I am thinking is the 380Z.

As for the Z31 being an "ugly duckiling" I kinda agree...although all it really needs is a few things to make it nice, Im looking for some Z33 wheels and might change the seats to 88SS ones.
