It has a long history of chilling effects on free speech and worse. People that try and badmouth scientlogy get hauled into court, usually for copyright infringement (for publushing subsections of the absolutely ridiculous scientology texts).

A lot of people may be tempted to say "all religions are crazy and evil", but I suggest you do some research on scientology specifically before you lump it in with "the rest of them". Consider the following

  1. it is VERY hard to leave the CoS. And people have a strange habit of ending up dead afterwards
  2. CoS has VERY experienced lawyers. One of the first anonymous email services (penet.fi, from the early 90s) was forced to reveal users because of a CoS lawsuit
  3. The guy behind it.. L Ron Hubbard... actually said "the best way to get rich in America is to start a religion"
  4. Being in the CoS is extremely expensive, and access to the materials is all withheld without sufficient payment
  5. What religion that actually cares about peopel withholds its teachings to people who can't pay? Christian churches certainly ask for money, but churhc attending, sharing of the messages, etc, certainly isn't contingent on paying!
