It's a model 98 Mauser, 8mm we believe...everyone wants to charge us $50 to get a barrel casting made to make sure it is in fact 8mm. We've also been told that many people like to interchange old stuff with "sportster" barrels made for lighter loads or something along those lines.

The gun still has original Nazi symbols stamped into the barrel. From what we know it was made in 1944 in Oberndorf Germany (BYF44 stamped on the top...hard to see in the pictures)

I've got all his books and references somewhere at my parents' house. There's an off-chance I have something extremely helpful in there.. and I'm not sure how willing I am to start sorting through the boxes. because it sucks. so i'd do my research on the interwebz first. i know the mosin nagant fans have a really good site.. i'd figure the mauser stuff would be even more well-researched and documented.

Either way I find it interesting and cool to think that this gun was made by Nazi Germany in WW2.
