As my thread last week stated, I really wanted to build a fish house....Until I found this. I have spent the last few nights at the shop finishing what little was left on the exterior, and building the inside to better suit my wants/needs. The builder must have bought out a Menards of the split logs, as he didn't finish the backside. The logs are real wood on the outside 3/4", then insulated foam on the inside. I searched Lowes, Menards, and Home Depot for these logs to finish the back with no luck. So my next choice was cedar shakes. I called around town and found that they would be around $100-$180 for the 50 sq ft I needed. Showed the fish house to a buddy tonight, and he said "I have a crap load of unused shakes from my dad's house he just built". $40 later, I have shakes being installed. They aren't a 'perfect' fit for the exterior, but they are much MUCH more appealing than the particle board exposed. I also got crafty and put some on the door!

Here are some specs:

25,000 BTU propane furnace (no electricity required) with thermostat

100 gallon propane tank

6 holes with fitted snap tight covers

currently 3 single beds, however we are now reframing for 2 double beds, and 1 bunk

Weighs ~3200 lbs

~ 11-12' high

Insulated sliding glass windows

Completely insulated walls (in addition to the insulation under the logs)

Wired lighting inside with light switch (12v)

Here are some progress pictures, and I will update as I get stuff done:

Investment: $650 for the fish house (old man I bought it from called me a Jew), $40 for cedar shakes, $90 for new 6 ply tires ($23 for mount and balance at Bemidji Tires Plus...tires on it were BAD BAD), $50 for building materials, $20 for locks/hinges/etc... $130 gas to get it = $1003

Considering the furnace alone is over $800 new (Empire DV25), fishing holes w/covers are $30 ea ($180 total) I think I am set for a few years of ice fishing and selling it for a profit.

More to come!

Silly rabbit fish houses aren't for fishing, they are for drinking duh. Nice work again have fun.

I have wired it for AC (also picked up a cheapy generator), and have tested and made the pre-existing DC setup workable as well. I plan to use the AC for the most part, but have made some wires with alligator clips to go from the inside hookup to a car battery if necessary. I put 2 different AC light sockets inside, with one light socket having a plug in that I will use a power strip for. The generator is good to 1000 watts, however I plan to use it to about 500 max. The 2 bulbs combined draw 28 watts, so I don't think it should be much of an issue.

I have also created 'sleeves' for the holes. I got crafty with some 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot (50% off ROCKED!). It took 2 buckets to make 1 sleeve. I cut the bottoms off both buckets, then turned one bucket upside down and slid it onto the other bucket then cut to fit the depth needed. This resulted in the 20" sleeve necessary to seal from the ice to the fish house. SLICK!

We plan to take it out deer hunting in 2 weeks and use it for our sleeping/drinking quarters... This will give me a good idea on how much propane I will need for a weekend (hoping to use a 'gas grill' tank vs. filling and leaving the 100lb at the house for the winter) and how well the generator works.

I have both ends framed for double beds. Beauty of it all, is both additions can be completely removed and stored under the bunk beds on the one side, giving full access to all 6 holes. I am far from a carpenter, and learned a few lessons last night:
