Hammond drove a VW Polo 3 cylinder Diesel, May driving an AWD diesel outback, and Clarkson drove a Jaguar 2.7L V6 Twin Turbo Jaguar because he didn't think it was possible and wanted to ride comfortably since he didn't think any of them would make it. He also drove most of the trip with A/C and heated seats on at 80 mph because he was trying to waste fuel, the other 2 drove very conservatively to save fuel.

Anyways, the VW polo got 80 mpg on the trip (10 gallon tank so 800 mile range), the subaru got 62 mpg ( i think around a 13 gallon tank, so around 800 mile range also), and the Jaguar got an average of 53 mpg(18-19 gallon tank so a range of 1000 miles, and this was driving 1/2 the trip without being conservative at all with his driving, he still had a couple of gallons in the tank after the race).

So now why in the hell do we not have any vehicles anywhere close to this in the US?? Discuss

Shitty gas

Shitty laws

The 2nd point really encompasses a lot of things.. like the fact that each imported powertrain variant (i.e. engine blah + transmission foo) must be independantly tested for EPA compliance... at some 6 digit cost to the manufacturuer. Each chassis has to be crash tested, and the tests are different.

There are some rules like the car has to have a catalytic converter... no matter how clean it runs if you sniff it.. or that it needs air-injection and EGR systems... no matter how clean the engine runs.

In general, to comply with US emissions standards and bad US gas you lose a little fuel economy and a little horsepower. Then you add in all the vehicle weight... USA spec cars are very heavily optioned whe nthey make it over here, since you have to justify a higher price that was forced on you via the extra stuff you have to go through to get the car legally sellable here.

I drove a year 2004 BMW with no cruise control when i was in germany. And i think it had crank windows in the back but power windows in the front. (This was a common setup on Euro-spec BMWs to save cost).
