I drag raced a few times and auto-x ed. I changed my tranny fluid every 10k miles or so and never ever had a problem. I never broke anything. The cars are also rather easy to work on too, compared to a bmw. lol. I also didnt drive it like a honda. The synchros in wrx trannys are different than a honda. you just cant force it into first gear while down shifting. Dont drive like an asshat and it wont break. If your friend says that wrx's are crap then hes a fucken moron and doesnt know what he is talking about.

Another thing is to check some of the forums like mnsubaru.com and nasioc.com for cars for sale. you can find car of all price and condition. Most of the people on mnsubaru are pretty truthful about there cars but just becareful when picking the car. Like jason , less mods are better but i wouldnt rule one out just because its modified. Alot of the enthusiasts really take good care of there cars on these sites. You can also check their username and go through all their previous threads to find out what they may have posted in the past.

GL with your search.

Post up the car your looking to buy in this thread before you buy it. If its got over 100k on the clock find out if it has had the timing belt done(if not budget ~$500 to get it done)

Depends what you plan to do with the car. If you like to 'launch' cars, a WRX will give you transmission troubles after awhile. The transmissions in WRX's have been named 'glass', however if you drive it nice (smooth gear changes, don't 'launch' it, good synthetic fluid), they will last as long as the car will. I wouldn't be afraid to buy a WRX in 02', however I would be afraid to buy an 02' that someone else MAY have beat on. If you can find one for sale (private party), from a lady or someone older that didn't beat on the car, and didn't modify ANYTHING, that will be your best bet.

They are no worse than the Eclipse GSX transmissions, but once again, the GSX's got a bad rap for their transmissions because of the same abuse (hard launches, 'banging' gears).

STi's are built much stronger and allow for 100x the abuse, but they are substantially more expensive to buy...but are worth it.
