Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks manager Doug Siminic has been fined an undisclosed amount of money by the Northern League for an on-field fight with acting Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Tom Vaeth on Monday night in Winnipeg.

RedHawks general manager Josh Buchholz said Tuesday that Simunic will not be further disciplined by the league. Simunic was in uniform and coaching again Tuesday against the Goldeyes.

“We agree with the league in their decision to not suspend Doug (Simunic),” Buchholz said. “We feel like the league acted appropriately and that the matter is done.”

Simunic came face-to-face with a charging Vaeth after Goldeyes pitcher Ace Walker threw behind RedHawks hitter Nic Jackson in the fourth inning.

After exchanging a few words, Simunic slapped Vaeth with an open left hand and attempted to hit him three times with a closed right fist.

The altercation was the culmination of a contentious first three innings. RedHawks starter Garry Bakker tossed a pitch over Winnipeg batter Kevin West’s head in the second inning, then hit West in the helmet in the third.

“(Vaeth) got a little too close. You’re not going to go with your hat in my face,” Simunic told the Winnipeg Sun on Monday night. “That’s all I’ve got to say. Take it for what it’s worth. The rest is history. There was no need. I was going out there to ask the umpire what the warning was all about.”

“Who expects that? What manager acts like that,” Vaeth told the Sun. “(Simunic) felt he needed to voice his displeasure at one of our guys and I didn’t want him talking to our players like that. The next thing you know we were standing face-to-face and he hit me with an open-hand slap.”

RedHawks owner Bruce Thom could not be reached for comment.
