In a properly built box, it would destroy your 2 Alpines and probably be louder than and as clean as a pair of 12W7's. The W7's wouldn't be a horrible route to go, but they are REALLY expensive for what you get in my opinion.

^+1, these 12's are really loud. Everytime i pull up to my buddy's house's they say when i am outside its like having a home surround sound in there house but its me. And my neighbors say they can never tell if its the train going by or if its me coming home....Puts a smile on my face every time i get in the car.

What kind of music do you mostly listen to? Is a 15'' in a ported box really a good suggestion if he listens to mostly fast rock/country versus pop/hip hop/rap? 15's can get pretty sloppy pretty quickly. His budget will help because he can buy a high end one, but for mostly rock and such, you'd need an SQ 15 at the least over the SPL type(L7) I would think. Maybe I'm not up on the new technology, but 15's aren't for everyone IMO, especially him being used to owning more of an SQ type sub in the Type R(atleast I think they are??).

Yes, a 15" in a ported box is an EXCELLENT suggestion for any of those music types that you listed Tony. Now if he had said I listen to primarily blues/jazz/classical, I would have suggested a pair of vented 10's instead.

Most people who hate ported enclosures are the ones that have never heard a good one with a driver specifically designed for that type of box. As for 15's in ported enclosures, there is a reason that many pro-audio cabinets use them for concerts - they get loud and sound clean while doing so (providing you hit them up with enough power AND if you have a subsonic filter on them below their F3 point...which his amp does offer).

I'm going to be running a 15" sub in my home theater system in either a vented or horn loaded enclosure if that makes anyone feel any better about my suggestion.

I'd talk to Kirk Schuck (STiSchucky) and see what he wants for his brand new in box RE Audio SX15(s). They still have full factory warranty on them through me and have never been used (party bus plans fell through) Full retail on them is $550 but I'm willing to bet he would let them go for around $300 each. Then figure $150 for a slot-ported box designed specifically for that sub and you would be right in line with what you wanted to spend....actually, he has some boxes sitting there already as well for those subs....might wanna look into it as the way those boxes were built was to ensure maximum sound pressure while still sounding musical.

So bring on what ever can make lil wayne and gucci mane and sound nice. The aplines are nice and for the price i got them for i am satisfied but i figured since they are a bit older i am looking to get something new and might as well go louder. Get something that will last me a long time and keep me happy, Have a nice bump when i am in the car and be able to turn it up really loud when i am outside the car playing basketball or something and want to hear it. you know.

Personally, I'd go with a single 15" in a properly built vented box. It will go lower than the 12's and hit just as hard/harder. I used to be the anti-ported/vented enclosure guy, but the technology behind the boxes and the subs designed to work with them is amazing now to where that is my preferred enclosure type. A single 12" in a vented box will hit nearly as hard as 2 12" sealed subs and definitely have a solid punch for most peoples music tastes.

What is your budget for said woofer (including box)? That will be the single largest determining factor in which sub/manufacturer I recommend.
