They were quoted a new tranny at over $3500 from the dealer. Sold the car to me for $500. 104k miles, perfect body and interior and it was fixed for free (I had a few VCs laying around).

My 91 FWD was $700 and near perfect.

Also had a 90 AWD 5-spd for $1500 and a 93 AWD Auto for $600 with a spun rod bearing, but mint.

They are out there. Look for timing belt victims. They are very cheap to fix and can usually had for $250-1000 in very good shape.
