I recently ran into some engine trouble and may have damaged the heads in my 65 mustang. Right now, the car is sitting at Ford and they are finding out exactly what's wrong with it. I'm just doing some preliminary research in case the heads are bad.

Opinions on what would work best with a 4.7 289 with an Edelbrock high rise intake, holley 650cfm carb, and I have no idea what else. I'm assuming stock internals and heads. I'm just going for something that would increase performance a little bit. I'll post up more when Ford lets me know what I need fixed; just want ideas.

And I know that the biggest problem with a 289 is that it is a 289. I don't care. As long as the engine isn't toast, I'm going to try to keep it. It should be cheaper.

Thanks,
Chris

What makes you think there is anything "problematic" about a 289? Its a ford small block, they will run forever make decent power with the right parts and dont cost a lot. Get on the Corral or TCStangs and look for some heads, just about anything should work with your combo. Some original 289 HiPo heads would be killer but they will cost you because of the popularity or restoring old mustangs. E7TE's are a truck head with decent valves and long runners, they are cast iron tho but are cheap and plentiful. Once in a while some GT40's can be had the iron ones are cheap tho some people try to get more than they are worth since they are a little rare, the aluminum ones are expensive and rarer still. Every once in a while some Trick Flow twisted wedge or AFR's come up for sale on the two websites I listed earlier not cheap but so worth it, with the right cam your combo could put 300 to the tires easy and run like it came off the assembly line that way.
