I was thinking, instead of spending $2,000+ on a spring break trip to Mexico, etc. that it would be interesting to see if there is any interest in setting up a "Top Gear" style car challenge series. Details/ideas explained below:

Dates: March 12-19, we will start and end in Fargo.

Rules/layout:

Car must be $1000 or less, the hunt begins NOW (keep in mind this event is still pending if you decide to purchase in the short-term)

Car must be "new to you," as in, you didn't own it or know of it prior to this event

The total round trip distance will be 2000 miles or give or take over the course of 7 days (TBD)

There will be a series of challenges along the way where points will be assigned (TBD)

There will be a debate after words of who has the best car and why.

Each car is required to have a CB/Walkie talkie.

Each car is required to have a Camera.

Teams are welcome to help spread the costs around more individuals, however, all must stay in/with the car purchased together. ($1000 rule applies to the entire cost of the car. In other words, a team of two still only has a $1000 total budget, not $2000)

Bring, at minimum, a basic mechanics tool set.

Bring camping items.

Low-speed bumping each others' cars will most likely happen (Must let others know whether you are ok being bumped or not. Will have something to show on people's cars whether they are ok with being bumped)

At the end, sell your car, recoup a good bit of your funds and realize you really didn't spend all that much money for a week long "vacation."

Depending on the amount of interest, we'll need support vehicles that we know can make the distance without a problem (i.e. a Toyota Hilux :D).

Let me know if you're interested in participating. If there's enough interest, I'll get the ball rolling on putting together the route/challenges. Route input is encouraged, but challenges will remain a mystery until given at checkpoints :D. Thanks!

I'm assuming by this you are talking about title jumping as Joel had touched on earlier. I do not advocate doing anything of the sort as that can cause problems for all parties involved. What I am saying is that one has 30 days to acquire the funds or make the time to register a vehicle, if money is tight or time is short during the DMV's business hours. However, if one's financial situation is as such, I wouldn't recommend spending any money on the trip as the individual should have other priorities to take care of, first. Primarily, not spending $500+ on a trip when one can't afford the less than $100 registration.

However (and more my original point) is that when you simply fill out the back of your registration card, that is providing evidence to a officer that you intend to/have intentions of registering your vehicle within 30 days of purchasing it. More or less to prevent you getting a none registered vehicle ticket. However the DMV and/or state has no record of your purchase or change of ownership of the vehicle. This is were personally I would be concerned because when you go to sell the car, you are selling a car register to someone else. Yes you have there signed 30 day permit and yada yada, but still could be an issue with selling it or even if the state finds out you bought it and never had the intent to register it and pay the registration to drive it on the roads and sell it before the 30 days are out.

I respectfully disagree with your first statement.

From my discussions with Bismarck and personal experience, here is my assessment:

One gets new plates on the spot in ND when one goes to the DMV to pay for registration and title transfer, as long as one doesn't order personalized plates. If one orders personalized plates, one is then given a separate document which states the license plates are coming in the mail (Not this exact wording, but you get what I mean. Have done this 5 times). The 30 day permit on the back of a registration card is so the previous owner of the car can keep his own plates and so one is then forced to register the vehicle within 30 days of the transaction occurring. If the person does not, he is then driving a non-registered vehicle which is punishable by a hefty fine (~$500 I want to say)

I didn't say to break the law, nor am I implying it. I'm explaining what the law is. My point: if registration money is an issue, you have time to gather the funds to register it formally. The 30 day registration thing is not bogus. In North Dakota, on the back of every registration card, there is a 30 day permit to place in the window for purchasers of the vehicle. This way, the previous owner of the vehicle keeps the licence plates as in ND the plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle as in MN. Call the ND DOT/DMV if you don't believe me.

$1000 car is the max...Could buy a $500 car (and split with another person = $250/each). Registration is around $50 for something like that, but if you buy the car from ND, the car comes with 30 days of registration via the previous owner's registration card. My insurance company covers vehicles I buy under my primary vehicle's insurance for 30 days after purchase as well. Then you can sell the car at the end, hopefully for around $500. Meaning you really only spent gas money, etc...

The goal is to keep the total out of pocket cost for those that don't keep their cars or have their cars break along the way to be $500 or less. Fuel will be $225 for most individuals round trip (2000 miles @ 30mpg gas avg. $3.25/gal)...Keeping in mind one can split this fuel cost amongst team members. Remainder of the money to go towards food, maybe a hotel, etc.

In all, it won't cost you that much as long as you play your cards right.
