We are building a tailgate rig and we would like the ability to run our 12v stereo off of our generator once we get to the tailgate lot. It obviously needs to pass some current, but what kind of device do we need? I know I could run a 10amp battery charger and hook it up to the battery and generator while we are using it so it won't die quite as fast, but there has to be a better way? It's a massive battery that should do like 25amps for 360minutes without dying but we aren't sure it's a good solution.

Possibly. We aren't very confident we can make it as is...the motor/tranny is solid but it probably needs tires and who knows what else. Plus, the tailgating at that game is a joke...you have to be a donor or you can tailgate at the fairgrounds which requires you to shuttle there. We are staying like a block from the stadium, so we will see.

Yep, worked great. We just had generator issues so eventually the battery started crapping out but the PS worked most of the week while we were playing around with all of it.

If you want to clean up the signal going in, use a 1:1 isolation transformer, and possibly capacitors after the power inverter... I was an electronics technician, and that's how it's done in industrial panels. I'd spec out the generator prior to ussuming the power is dirty.

I'm going to check on the thing from Chuck first, looks simple. We are wiring the bus in 110 around the outside walls with like ~3 boxes on each side. We have three amps to run right now, so 45 is the minimum I would try to run IMO. The panel would be nice tho.

We always run our TV's off the generator while tailgating and haven't had an issue as of yet.

Zac, get back for a game and we'll show you bachelor party V2 in the west lot.

Amateur radio guys have a need for clean 12v DC, and there are a lot of power supplies out there for them. When I competed USACi, I used a Tripp Lite PR40. 32 Amps continuous IIRC, but there are bigger and smaller options to suit your system..

Another option is a supply meant for a workbench or lab - I use a Pyramid 52KX at home to power my R/C battery chargers. 40 Amps continuous. There are also a bunch of this type of supply built especially for R/Cers.

If you need big amperage, I'd look here - http://cascadeaudio.com/power_converters/power_converters.htm

the battery charger idea would work fine, but between the generator and charger you are going to get a decent amount of noise

You will more than likely take out any kind of advanced electronic while trying to run anything on it . I would say you should get an old home receiver and run it to your speakers. Use one you won't mind frying. just my 2 cents

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/TRIPP-LITE-DC-Power-Supply-5JK18?cm_mmc=GoogleBase--Electrical--Power%20Supplies-_-5JK18&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=5JK18
Notice the price difference just for jumping from 5.8 to 12 amps, the 5.8 amps is plenty to power a cd player though (we actually have the northenrtool one at work and has worked fine for many years).
A little bit more you can get a 30 amp, but that still wouldn't power much of an amplifier, I suppose if you're not powering subs just mids and highs it would work.
Here's a 45 amp converter that might do the job though.
