It sounds liek it is only running oin 3 cylinders but I am not sure. It smells really damn rich and pops and sputters when getting on the gas.

Could the timing be off? I am not too familiar with these cars at all so I don't know what the common problems are with them. Could the timing be way out of place?

If you owned one and didn't have any problems, you are lucky and the new owner is going to have all the problems that they have, being a technician, I deal with them all the time....

now, to this persons thread here, definately try the ignition stuff, but dont over look the ignition module, it is expensive as hell, but gm likes to go through them for sure. Ran into a lot of Quads with similar problems and all it was the module. But it probably needs a tune up in the first place so replace the plugs and make sure that the boots/tower is good. check for any corrosion and damage.

If the stuttering is all the time, sounds like it might be the headgasket. If it occurs only under heavy load (such as when trying to accelerate, especially from a high gear) then that is usually the coil packs. They're really easy to replace. LMK if you need anymore help.

Yeah no doubt they have their problems but there is parts out there already to fix those problems. I knew 2 guys that have Super Charged their quads. One is in cali and other is in canada and never had a problem yet. Personally i think the whole problem with them is the high compression they have just to make the 180 HP. But you and I both know GM can mess up a wet dream even if it was handed to them.

There is no engine out there that has a worse reputation than the quad4, BAR NONE! You can't tell me that they aren't notorious for head gaskets and even cracking heads. Even on a well maintained engine. I PERSONALLY have seen it 5 times with friends and family members alone not to mention all the other ones I've seen out there. I understand that you own one and will stick up for yourself because of this. I'm not going to get in a pissing match with you either. I've been in the automotive field for 12yrs. in one way or another and have sold parts for them and worked on them I am purely speaking on experience. Just callin it how I see it.

Ahh thats bullshit, I've owned my 90 GTZ quad4 HO since 99 and i've never thrown anything into but a new powersteering belt and some sparkplugs that didn't even need changing. Oh wait i spend a whole whapping 2.33 cents on some vacuum hose.

If u drive it like a idiot of course you'll have problems. your not drag racing the car so i don't see y u ever need to go past 4k RPMS

Just because ur motor is 10+ years old don't mean it won't still run like its new. Its how much you beat the hell out of it. Btw my 90 GTZ only has 108,000 miles on it and still run like new.

It has spark plug boots that go from a coil adapter tower to the spark plugs themselves. Both the boots themselves and the tower are notorious for being bad. You can get the plug boots and tower at your local auto parts strore. I would try that first and then see what happens. The coil tower os white so if there's and spark jumping or carbon tracking, it should be easy to see. The tower isn't cheap either, it's like 50 to 75 bux if I'm not mistaken. The Napa part #'s are.... 727414 for the boots and ICA101 for the tower. One of the two coils could be bad also but it's not as likely.
