Right now we have the 3 max computers connected and it can see through the switch and whenever i try connect the 4th computer, one of the other 3 gets its access taken away. How would i get around that? Looking at all these linksys wireless routers (dad wants wireless now for his laptop) they all say wireless router with 4port switch.........so if its a switch wouldnt cableone be able to see through that again or not? Would i have to get a wired router to get around this or is there an easier way?

Right now this is how its set up

...............Cable Modem
...............4 port Switch
...........Switch2 ................ Moms Computer
..This Computer ...Dads Computer

Or you could say the modem connects to the switch upstairs, that switch is connected to my moms computer and then the 2nd switch downstairs, and that 2nd switch has this computer and my dads computer hooked up to it. Whenever i try hook up the computer in my room, usually my dads or this computer lose their connection. We are planning on trading the 1st switch for a router, but this is where my delima is. ANswer away

It uses one internet ip address when hooked directly to the modem. To the internet company, if they are stupid, it will look like one computer. From the router there are usually at a minimum 4 connections to hook other computers up to. These 4 connections are part of your local network and have addresses such as 192.168.XXX.XXX. Your computers will share the router to access the internet using these different local addresses. You need to set up the router to access the internet just like you did with the computers you had set up already(or manually set it up if you had the computers previousely set up automatically). Then the computers you have hooked into it will need to be setup automatically...depending on the type and brand of router you get. When you buy the router, get one with a firewall...otherwise people can hack your network and get into your computers.

Switch: A unit used for expanding a network that is already in place, such as behind a router.

Your network should be like this.

Modem -> Firewall/Router -> then switches -> computers

Don't get confused...the router should have a switch built in. This is because otherwise it would only have one connection on back that would require the end user to also buy a switch. For the sake of simplicity and to no confuse the end user further, they have incorportated a firewall, router , and switch in one unit. They are hooked up internally like this.

modem connection in -> firewall -> router -> switch -> 4 connections out

I hope that helps ... probably confused ya more now.

I've never heard of a limited number of computers you can hook up. I can't see how they can charge you for each computer or limit you to 3. It's not like there's 3 seperate lines or anything. That would be like the cable company charging you for each tv you have hooked up to it. It's not like it's going to slow things down anymore with a fourth computer, sounds like there trying to rip you off. I guess you could call them and ask exactly what the deal is with only alowing 3 computers. I also think theres programs like norton ghost that let you go online but makes you invisble to every one else, I could be wrong though. It's worth a try.
