Personally I think chevy had to change the name while going to a new platform to shake off the bad rap the old cavalier had gotten from magazines and quality issues. Same goes for the grand am.

The new cobalt is based on the same platform as the saturn ion but will be more refined than the ion meaning they actually tried to cut down on NVH yet the car remains thoroughly old school. Here is a snippet of a review from http://www.autosite.com/Previews/2005-chevrolet-cobalt.asp.

"Where the new Chevrolet Cobalt potentially disappoints is under the sheetmetal. Based on the global General Motors Delta small car platform, the Cobalt shares its basic underpinnings with the Saturn ION, a car that has underwhelmed critics and consumers alike. The suspension is not a four-wheel-independent design, with MacPherson struts in front and an unsophisticated torsion beam solid rear axle. Front and rear stabilizer bars come standard, and three levels of suspension tuning are available depending on the model. Disappointingly, drum rear brakes are used on all but the performance-tuned SS models. Steering is electric, a speed-sensitive variable effort system tuned differently for the SS models, delivering a turning radius of 34.8 feet.

Under the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt's shapely hood resides one of three available engines. Base, LS and LT models are powered by a 2.2-liter inline four cylinder that makes about 140 horsepower. The performance-oriented SS gets a 2.4-liter inline four with variable valve timing that is expected to produce 170 horsepower. Coupes in SS Supercharged trim will receive a supercharged 2.0-liter four banger capable of producing more than 200 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, with a four-speed automatic optional. The SS Supercharged coupe gets a beefed up manual to manage its power and torque."

I think the car will sell ok to Chevy diehards but there are much better cars out there for this price range.

Here is a snippet of a G6 review from the same site at http://www.autosite.com/Previews/2005-pontiac-g6.asp

"Based on the long-wheelbase Epsilon platform that serves as the basis for the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx, the 2005 Pontiac G6 SE and GT will both get a 3.5-liter OHV V6 making 200 horsepower and featuring electronic throttle control. Endowed with a high-output, 3.9-liter V6 making 240 horsepower through variable valve timing, the G6 GTP arrives in the middle of the 2005 model year. For 2006, the standard motor in the SE model will be a 2.4-liter DOHC Ecotec four-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower. With curb weights starting around 3,400 pounds, this four banger might have its work cut out for it.

A four-speed automatic comes standard on SE and GT for 2005, featuring manually interactive shifting on the GT and driving the front wheels on both versions. The GTP will feature this transmission also, but will offer the option of a six-speed manual to delight true enthusiasts. "

Like the full article said the car is far more upscale looking and feeling than the old grand am, in fact, some say this is better than the grand prix even the the gp is supposed to be the bigger brother. Looking at the engine options I'm not impressed at all. They're only making 200HP from a 3.5 liter engine? Nissan is pulling 240+, Honda and Mazda are creating more from 3.0 liter engines. A torque peak of 220 is great at 3200 but I'd be interested to see the rest of the curve looks like.
