And never at the rear of the car to boot. I would guess that it was installed there for the very purpose of shooting flames.

Back i my muscle car days, we'd put a spark plug in the exhaust pipe, richen the carburetor, and voila. But in a F.I. vehicle it's a little harder to accomplish (unless you own a rotary). The vehicle runs too lean to get enough raw fuel in the exhaust to make it ignite just on a spark plug alone. I have seen it happen on a newer vehicle, just not without adding a crappy fuel injector to the mix. I wouldn't reccomend that especially with the spark plug BEFORE the muffler. Whoever hooked that up must not have done their homework and is probably why it's not hooked up.
