My Family and I found a place to insure my car for 300/month. This is still fairly high, but hell of a lot better than 12,000/year. My dad just got back from a trip to arizona and he made me an offer I don't know if I can refuse. He told me that if I sold my car, and got the loan payed off, he will GIVE me his 98 Continental(loaded-leather, 4.6 V8, air shocks, etc) to drive until I can save up enough money for another car. I would like go to school somewhere next year but It wouldn't have been possible with the car payment and insurance on the civic. I figured that with the extra 500 plus dollars per month I would have free, I could either A. rent a one stall storage unit and build some little beater go-fast car. Or I could throw it away and let all the moola gain interest and get a pimp ride next year or the year after. I have a month to make this hard decision and I need some help. Vote on the poll. Oh yeah, I have a buyer lined up, so I would be able to sell it without a problem.

Personally, what I would do is prep the civic for storage, put comp. insurance on it ($20/mo) and put it in a storage garage for a couple years. Buy a shitty beater for $500 and drive that around (like a perfect driver to make sure your record stays clear). Once your insurance rates drop (and possibly have the civic paid off) get the civic back out of storage. It will have relatively low miles due to not being driven for a couple years, it will be cheaper to insure, it will be paid off, etc... Just my .02

Sounds like a good idea, except that you are paying $300 a month for the next few years on a car that you aren't driving. And meanwhile the car is just going down in value due to being older. It isn't that unique of a car, you would be better off selling it, and then just saving the money you would have otherwise spent on loan payments, storage fees, and insurance, then you could buy a nice car straight out, or buy an even better car with a small loan.

I am getting it fully wet sanded and buffed sometime soon here, new brake pads all the way around, putting the new seats I ordered in, and selling it. I have an interested buyer at 9,5 right now, and he will be getting back to me later today once he is done at the bank.

I think the plan with the beater project car is to find a crap honda(probably shanes hatch laying behind t-masters, and do either an LS-turbo or a d-turbo, and tin it out, full race style. No licensing, no insurance, just track. I will not be in a hurry to get it done, so I'll wait for good deals to come my way, and I will in the mean time save up money.

Yea, i am building 2 cars right now and going to school full time. It takes awhile and they mite not be the nicest things around, but its still fun. Its easier though cuz i get to use my dad's garage but it is 2 hours away from school so i can only work on them during weekends.

If you rent a storage unit and start working on a car, it will suck away all of your money. Just accept the fact that you can't do the car thing while you are in school. Bank all your money and have fun with it after you have an education and a job.

With the increased earnings you will always be able to get a nicer car later.....and you could be throwing away your future careers so you can have a car thats nice when you are young, not a good plan. Go to school, save whatever money you can on the side and then when you are done you can buy a nicer car.

That is why i have saved up for everyone of my cars and paid cash for them, then built them myself. They may not be the nicest, but they are all paid for.
