Actually it's worked before, my dads coworker said something like that in a situation when the cops were acting uninterested in his call to them, it turned them into a bunch of VERY interested cops in dealing with it. Well pawning it was a mistake so that guy deserves to get caught. There are ways to be smart about it. Pawning stuff you get nothing and have a high risk of getting caught.

Getting into a fight now of days will get you into just as much trouble.

would have a previous record of similar problems. Get as much info together as you can and goto the police station. Fill out a police report. If there is a record they'll do a little more work, after a week they'll get back to you. If something easy turns up, your golden. If it takes to much time they'll say "we couldn't find anything".
