Not like Hondas where you can abuse them forever before something breaks. lol

Timing Belt every 60k miles, Water pump at the same time.. Replace the valve cover gasket when you buy it, stock ones leak.. Stock control arms tend to squeak loudly.. If you have the BERU coilpacks on the car, you'll likely be fine.

Also, the 1.8T (in all its forms) has been known to have an issue with oil sludge. Make sure the vehicle has received only Synthetic oil and that its using the larger sized oil filter. If its oil was changed at the dealership it'll be using the new filter size and Mobil1 0w40 oil.

The 2.8 V6.. gotta be careful with it if you want to mod. Pre 1998, the 2.8 was a 12v V6 which is incredibly reliable if you dont mind oil burning/leaking slightly. Keep her topped off and it'll run forever -- Downside -- no real aftermarket for the engine. After 1998 the 30v V6 was introduced which has a few more options performance wise. There is a supercharger kit that achieves similar performance as my T28 kit on my 1.8T. Beyond that you're on your own.

You have to be careful what you buy to make sure it was maintained well but if you are well educated before you purchase you can find some quality vehicles that'll last a long time.
I have heard of alot of electrical problems with the 98 and 99's. Also, I heard it's a crap shoot if you buy them used because it's hard to know if it has had proper maintanence.
