Hot off the wire. So no one do anything stupid on the 20th!

"The Fargo Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Saturday November 20, 2004.
This will be the second checkpoint conducted by Fargo Police Department personnel this year.
The checkpoint will be located somewhere within the city limits of Fargo. The first checkpoint, on October 15, 2004, resulted in 13 DUI arrests.
It is the goal of law enforcement personnel to lower the number of arrests, with media assistance, by getting the message out to the public about the checkpoint.
The goal by notifying the public of the checkpoint is that members of the public will make alternative plans to driving if they plan to drink. Sobriety Checkpoints are a proven deterrent.
They also educate drivers about the dangers of alcohol impaired driving.
According to a 2002 report in Traffic Injury Prevention, scientific research indicates sobriety checkpoints consistently reduced alcohol related crashes, typically by 20%.
The review combined the results of 23 scientific studies from around the world."

Announcing checkpoints is stupid. Just set em up and catch more of them. If they're gonna drive drunk, they deserve to have their driving record trashed and everthing that comes with it. Fuck em.

I agree its stupid, however I think it is the only way they can get around the unlawful search and seizure laws....if they pull everyone over on a given street its legal, if they selectively pull over motorists who don't appear to be doing anything wrong its harrassmenet.

Students at NDSU and I think MSUM (I could be wrong with MSUM) can get $2.00 cab rides from anywhere in the F-M area to anywhere in the F-M area after 8:00pm. All a student needs is a college ID with a Doyle Cab sticker on it. It has saved me quite a few possible drunken accidents or DUIs.

                    MSUM is the same way

                    -95 CBR 600F3

We've come to the point where no extraordinary preformance can occur without the presumption that someone has cheated.

wait a second, this is the bush administration, anything that could possibly prevent someone from getting hurt is legal 😉

how did you read that into my post? i just said that anything to prevent injury was ok under the bush administration (read: the patriot act gives law enforcement a lot of freedom)

i don't drink and don't intend to try drinking and driving, so i don't particularly care one way or the other

first of all this hole this has NOTHING to do with bush. this is the STATES decision.
your argument is based on something that is simply not true. we live in under a federalist society, and these things are left up to the individual states.

the patriot act lists nothing about this situation.

please try to separate fact from your feelings about the subject.

It was an attempt @ humor I believe....

BUT sobriety checkpoints do have to follow the lawful search and seizure portion of the US constitution. Therefore they have to announce them and they are supposed to pull over everyone on those roads at that time to prevent discrimination claims.

No humor involved. Each state also has a constitution, some allow checkpoints within city limits, some don't. You will not find checks happening within city limits in Moorhead any time soon.
Citing the constitution does not answer why this is not related to Bush or the patriot act, explaining Federalism does.
