i called the guy and he said that it was getting fixed because "at 100k miles youre supposed to replace the valves, but that never got done so at 136k they finally broke." im assuming he meant the timing belt broke and bent them. i finally called him again today to see if he got it back, and he said that it all got fixed, but now theres something wrong with the bottom end. he thinks it might be a bearing, but he doesnt want to put any more money into it so hes going to sell it as is. he said its driveable but it knocks really bad.

so my question is, would it be worth picking it up for $5,500? how easy/expensive would it be to have someone check it out and get it fixed?

But if he took that bad of care of it to damage the motor like that it makes me wonder how well he took care of the rest of the car. 5,500 is cheap I guess for a WRX, but still if you end up having to spend a good amount of cash to get it to a reliable point it's not worth it. I would stay clear of this car if you want an opinion. Sounds like the guy didn't know how to take care of it. Could also have transmission troubles waiting in the wings, suspension's shot, etc....
