because people found out how much fun they actually are instead of reading about it. a lot of speculation was brought about when they announced it up until the day it was released. many people didn't want one just because of the "different way the controllers work" or "nintendo went downhill since the snes". well, its out and people playing are having much more fun than they originally thought, along with the PS3 and 360 fans who would never wanna buy one, played it and now want one more than the others.
