whatever you do, get the longest warranty you can that covers the most you can. theres always a good chance that some day in the future youll be carrying it around and something will happen to it. in my experience with dell, its almost a 'no questions asked' kind of policy. it breaks, you call them, they send someone out to pick it up and they fix it fast.

Read this http://www.gen-x-pc.com/laptopmanu.htm THEN make your decision. Usually, you are paying for customer service and reputation. I do agree with Dell being a good choice if nothing else, because of their warranty and customer service. But as far as build quality, there is alot of things shared across the board. You ultimately get what you pay for. Other than a HD failure, my Compaq has been great and have absolutely no quams about it.

Normally I wouldn't buy the service plans, but I was an employee at the time and got a pretty good deal. The Gateway fucking blows BTW, their build quality sucks and it will break on you. Here's my recommendation: Buy a Dell with the best warranty. Here's why: No matter who you buy from, anything can happen. When you buy a warranty, atleast you know that your shit is going to be fixed no questions asked. My Dell warranty is top notch. I have accidental coverage and overnight repair. I email them that I need something, they email me back saying that a part will be shipped out and someone will call me tomorrow to fix it, or if I want, I just do it myself. The warranty has come in handy A LOT. After all, you're only buying a guaranteed piece of shit...
