We start out not using them just to get comfortable with the problems and variables, and then add factors like wind resistance, friction, etc. as time goes on.

In ME221, 222, 223 (the statics & dynamics classes at NDSU) you almost always negate those varibles. Wind Resistance is almost NEVER used.
