In my opinion, I really don't belive this supra will replace or be as good as the twin-turbo set up back in the 90's when they were making them. Plus, this one is crazy expensive and the only people who will or might be driving them are really really rich people, or celebrities...I really think that making this "new" supra in a sense destroy's what Toyota accomplished back in 1994-1997...The V8 version supra is not what a supra is all about I think...

I think your geographical location has something to do with it. There are a bunch of NA-T guys and there are as much 1JZ guys if not more. And there are a handful of 2JZGTE guys, some with 6speeds.

As for the 3SGTE Supra's, I'm not sure what class they raced in but I definately know they existed as there was one of the teams for sale in the past 2 years with that motor in it.

I'm not really an expert, but that sounds odd to me. Are there any 4 cyls in GT-500? Maybe there was also a GT-300 Supra, and that ran an MR2 derived engine?

In any case, http://supergt.net/jgtc/race/2004/04team/04tm038en.htm suggests a GT-500 Supra team ran a 3UZ-FE, 4.4 L 32v V8.

I havent' seen many SC chassis cars in the US to begin with, much less modded ones.. just one guy that runs at Audi club events.
That v8 supra is fine, and I bet if you compared todays dollars to when the mk4 supra was new, they wouldn't be all that far off, accounting for inflation. It's just an expensive car. Someone will make a turbo kit for the v8, no doubt. It'll make 2000 hp with bolt ons. Cause that's what supras are good for.

Because, why would they make a V8 Supra when the I6 2JZ motor made alot of power. I don't understand why you would want to buy a car with that much power to the wheels already. It's almost like it's already modded and there isn't much left to do...Seems like a waste to me...I think they should upgrade the I6, twin-turbo it again, and sell them as they were. They were/are gorgeous cars...They should keep them that way....

Who cares what you think. That seems to be the consensus.

Stereotyping heavily.

This concept is not hard to grasp. Its competition will be more upscale than a Honda Civic and more like a Viper ( as stated elsewhere in the thread).

Other not mentioned possible reasons....

People that have that much money to throw around on a sports car don't care about the "potential it has", but rather the specs in the brochure. And to a potential buyer a V-8 is more eye appealing, to the American Market, than a V-6 turbo or not.

Also take into consideration NASCAR, like it or not Toyota does have its feet wet in that arena now and that may also have some influence on the engine of choice, not only for marketing but trickle down technology as well.

Clearly a V8 supra is not only already a done deal, but it has far more racing pedigree than the 2JZ supra ever did.

Infact, the Supra mkIV and the Lexus SC/GS are the same platform (and the SC 300 uses a 2JZ non-turbo motor, but putting supra bits in it is a cool but not widely done move in the US)

I think part of the supra formula is forced induction. A bi-turbo V8 sounds fantastic, but i dont think that's in the cards.

It is highly unlikely they could put the old bi-turbo I6 back into production due to emissions reasons. They've also ditched the I6 platform in the Lexus IS series, which, when introduced here also ran a 2JZ NA VVTi engine.

Toyota bringing back a supra here at all, in any form, is a welcome move. Toyota has all but resigned themselves to making shitty appliance vehicles, with the Supra and MR2 being the only recent exceptions (and arguably the Celica GT-S, but i don't happen to like FWD so i don't consider it a real contender).
