Gee, is that why Toyota is eating up the global market share? Second to only GM. I think some people better do some more research.

That's assuming a lot to say reliability is the reason Toyota is taking over. If Japanese automakers all had superior quality like was stated, wouldn't Honda/Mitsubishi/Subaru also be leaps and bounds ahead of Domestic producers as well? Toyota and Honda are really taking over now because of fuel efficiency more than anything. Another reason is the fact that they used to be high-quality vehicles compared to ford/gm/dodge so they stick with that line of though, even if it may have crumbled over time. Customers aren't as informed as you think they might be. Just because we all might take every detail and fact into consideration doesn't mean your average joe schmoe will, most will just buckle under salesman pressure and buy slightly uninformed.

Some of their engineering is just shit....yesterday i changed the oil in my dads Trailblazer, and the oil filter is straight up and down so when you pull it off hot oil has to flow over on your hand, and it is up in between some brackets so you have to grab it from directly below....terrible design if you ask me.

So poke a hole in the bottom of the filter to let the oil drain out before you take it off.

All you have to do is let go of the filter before the oil gets on your hand and use a rag, haha :icon_scratch:

Well their are obviously ways to avoid getting oil on my hand, im just stating it is a bad design on it. Oh...and it isn't easy to get to either, so it is a bitch to get to, and it spills unless you take care of it some other way....

Reliabie inexpensive cars is the primary reason Toyota is taking over the world and will be the #1 car manufacturer by the end of this year/early next year. As for the second part of your statement, Honda is a big player in the auto game and Mitsubishi/Subaru are kinda niche market specialists. Not everyone wants an AWD car for economical reasons (gas mileage), etc.. so that turns some people off from Subaru. Mitsubishi currently only has a couple of cars that have a good following, and they are in some financial trouble. The funny thing is that Honda/Toyota/Subaru ALL have their engines in some of the domestic owned cars, hell Saab (a GM Company) basically reskinned a WRX creating what is often refered to as the Saabaru. How many domestic motors do you see under the hood of Japanese autos?

Ya like the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe for instance. Not to mention the Lotus Elise/Exige. All are Toyota powered.
And people wonder why Toyota is as big as it is.:icon_scratch:

I think GM spent all of its time and resources on designing and marketing high profit trucks and suv's. When gas was cheap people couldn't buy enough of them. Their lack of investment in the cars is coming back to bhaunt them. Maybe they could get somebody to design a decent looking car? IMHO most of them are pretty ugly. At least chrysler has the idea with the new challenger. If it goes into production.

you ALWAYS change the oil when the engine is at operating temp...

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

Compared to most honda's and toyotas/lexus's, where the oil filter is right next to very hot manifold, I would rather have oil drip on my hand.

                        That was a genius move.

Wes you forgot about the Honda motor and tranny in the Saturn Vue. I suppose GM is just realizing that they cannot build quality so may as well just out source it.
Since the unions wanna take their bias out on wartime vets, I say F#*K detroit! Click on link to read about the haters. I guess that working in a domestic car company is more patriotic than ditching IEDs and bullets.
                          http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0503/15/A01-117640.htm

Here is the most recent consumer reports article I have read. It said out of 31 vehicles ranked most reliable or best buy 29 were japanese.
                          http://autos.msn.com/advice/CRArt.aspx?contentid=4023544

I may be biased since I have a 00 Accord EX, 96 Tacoma 4x4 and 88 RX7 TurboII. However I have owned my fair share of domestics to and must agree with CR and can see why detroit is struggling. I also think the domestics are losing their core supporters by building crap in Mexico while the Japanese imports are building more and more in the U.S. Anyway I think Mazda has managed to do worse in electronics than GM which I did not think was possible. So just because its Japanese obviously is not a full guarantee either. If it was not for the rohatery I would not buy a Mazda, it would be Toyota or Honda all the way. Enough on my rant take care guys and keep the bickering alive 🙂

they just did a show on dateline about the asian market liking GM.... they actaully like buick the people they interviewed over their all said they like the look and styling of buick and it's a mark of you made it.... so it's not about reliablity.... and yes the suposide american cars have almost caught up on reliabity and actually the past year toyota has lost some reliablity (auto line detroit talked about their mistakes they've been making this past year) I think it happens to all companies they become king of the hill and let it go to their head.... i remeber when kenwood was the deck to have now they are just cheap crap... i remeber when white mart was top dog ( most of you probably never even heard of whitemart) it's now white drug... then came kmart now it's walmart but target is gaining back market share on walmart in america .....

look at history it even goes with countries or goverments.... was what about 200 years ago england was top dog
