So I was changing the wheels on my trans am today and figured I would see whats rubbing when I turn in the driver front. Becasue when you cramp the wheel all the way it sounds like its rubbing on the inner fender liner. Well What I found blew me away. Apparently the nut that hold the strut shaft to the upper strut mount fell off and the shock had compressed and the end popped out. The spring is bowed out some until it hits the upper control arm where its been rubbing every time the suspension compresses. So now I got to tak eit apart and figure out the damage, but the fun part is dealing with the spring, because their isn't much room for me to get the compressor in there, because if I just unbolt stuff that spring will pop out and fly since the strut is no longer holding it. Here's a picture, you can see the threads where the top nut screw on between the top 2 spring coils.

Well got it apart, none of it can be salvaged. Shock is busted, the shaft was jamed so far into the shock that it has seized up, for what I can tell its been this way for a few years. Upper strut mount has to be replaced also, looks like the nut pulled through it and made a mess, I could make it work, but wouldn't be trustworthy under hard use. Dammit. Well off to the salvage yard monday to grab a replacement.
