What is the difference (HP wise) between a turbo car with a high flow cat or no cat at all. The reason I ask is my buddy got a new 3 inch exhaust for his turbo daytona, but had the put on a high flow cat. Is there a big difference in hp?

      why did he have to?

what is your difinition of "big?" 10?

stock turbo stock boost probably not going to see that big of a difference

I'm sorry, my "M" button doesn't work very well. I meant to say he had them put a cat on it. It's a stock turbo right now, but it is getting a larger one soon. I was just wondering if it would have been in his best interest to not get one.

I figured it would be around 10.

Also, he went to exhaust pro's, they wouldn't make it without a cat.

Thats what I am trying to get him to do. I told him he should just ditch the cat, but I don't think he will.

if he's from around here, he shouldn't have too many problems legal wise as long as it is quite enough. As for the Hp difference, yes there will be a difference, but his main goal should be fuel management. If he doesn't have a decent way of managing the proper air/fuel going into the engine, he wont see the maximum power potentials. What year Dat is it? OBD2 is the question I have about it....dont remember if they made it that far to have OBD2 or not, but i'm pretty sure it doesn't.

no matter what its still illegal to not have a cat on a street vehicle in the us unless it like pre 71 or something like that. but you probably wont have a problem if you dont as long as you dont go on the internet and go hey guys i took my cat off today YAY

So I shouldn't say "Hey guys, I took all 3 cats off 4 years ago" then either I suppose?

tell him to gut the cat and put a 3inch o.d. pipe (or what ever size i.d. is on the exhuast) inside of it so it doesnt resonate it will look legal and not restrict flow and the cop will have no way to prove it not legal

but if you do this youll need a test tipe or something there a HUGE differance in running open DP or no cat.

In my personal experience, I like my car alot better with a cat on. I had a small round magnaflow high flow cat put on, and it made my car quite a bit quieter, especially at idle. Also it stinks alot less at stoplights, and I think I got a little low end back (lost some top end, but I don't really use the top end that much)
A cat may affect horsepower a bit, but not much, and unless you are squeezing every last bit out of the car already, you could get that back somewhere else. I think for me, the cat was a great decision and i'm very happy with it. YMMV

depending on application you WILL NOT lose much power at all if you have a GOOD converter. I have made 600 plus to the wheels w/ them and alot of cars sound better with them in place. People that pick up horsepower w/ no converter is generally due to the cats being plugged. Good converters on a supercharged car will INCREASE the HP. I would advise him to leave the converter alone.

I love my car with no cat and it isnt even that loud.....:p I am guessing once I put on the 3inch turbo back I gained 20-30 hp.

There's the answer you were looking for. A really good high flow cat only becomes a significant restriction at ridiculous amounts of power and up. I grew up around the smell of unburnt gas so it's no cats for me. I love it. I said I love it.

BAH! you might notice a slight difference without a cat. There aren't any tests, so you don;t have to worry about emissions. while you're at it, put a spark plug in the tail pipe.
