Good deal or not on a car.

I'm going to look at a 2002 buick regal GS this weekend. It has 56K on the body, It is all black, heated leather, moon roof, fully loaded, etc etc. Looks awesome. Really nice paint and interior. Olny downside: The guy selling it sells cars I beleive, bought at an auction with a blown motor/tranny...replaced the tranny/motor with another L67 and tranny out of another GS (with 67K miles) owned by his friend who had the car totalled. He says it runs great, and the new engine wasn't damaged at all. The car doesn't have a bad history or a salvage title, just they new engine. HE is asking $8999, I am going to offer him $8K if it checks out good. Good deal, or not worth the headache? KBB is ~$11K.
What do you think?

One thing to make sure of is the the a/c system, I know it sounds crazy but for the ecu to go into diagnostic mode a/c system must be supported. If it is not and if there are problems 99% of the codes in the computer won't be able to be read or the cel won't come on at all. There has been quite a few of these going around not just in the F/M area but across the U.S. If your mechanic buddy has a scan tool that would pick it up right away if he doesn't I read codes for free on all obd2

Yeah those motors are pretty reliable...
Definately look at the suspension, etc...I would bet that the blown motor was a dumb mechanics fault, etc. Most people of the age that would beat on a car won't be buying a Regal, whether or not its supercharged. It could have had a plugged fuel injector, etc causing the motor to pop...ya never know...but yeah that seems like a good price if everything checks out...

I have 225k on a '91 Regal with a 3800 Tuned Port, and that thing runs like a dream, never done any work to any of the drivetrain, and I've given that car a pretty hard life for the time I drove it. I wonder why one would blow at only 56K, especially the newer ones.
