^All new vehicles get tested on the roads. They need to see how they handle certian situations, sitting in traffic, snow/ice.....
There are alot of preproduction model cars that do winter testing in northern MN. Last winter I saw a group of 5+ audi completely covered in platic... driving around together.

^^^^ true true, and they dont stick around long when the camera's come out. Aston Martin tests their cars in the Mohave desert.
