Damn! My girlfriend's sister left work an hour early and was on the bridge almost exactly an hour before that happened. If she wouldn't have left early she could've been on it..

Lets keep our fingers crossed, usually it is a very bad sign when so few people show up at hospitals in a disaster like this. its insane, i have family in that area and have been on that bridge a few times it is hard to beleive.

apparently they were working on the bridge when it happened. One of the news clips I heard said that it was very near where a jackhammer was working, but this is 100% hearsay, so take it for what its worth.

They are all over this on the new its going to be on CNN live for the next two hours they're saying. It will be interesting to see how this developes. They are saying that the bridge was "structurally sound". I'm curious to what the cause was.

ya i was eating at granite city when i saw it on the news, they even turned the music on and put the overhead audio to the tv... so everyone could hear it.

I thought i heard that the bridge was to be closed tomorrow and that traffic would be re-routed so that they could finish there work. Anybody else hear this?

This is what i have found.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the eight lanes of I-35W crossing the river were supposed to be restricted to a much reduced flow beginning on Tuesday night for the northbound lanes and at 8 p.m. Wednesday for the southbound lanes, about two hours after the collapse. The reason stated on the agency's Web site was "overlay work," which refers to roadway resurfacing.
