You mean 2 125's right?

I am wierd, I can usually do just as much doing dumbbell presses as I can with bench presses. I think it has something to do with my freakishly long arms.

That IS weird. Most can lift 15, sometimes 20% more with a barbell bench than with dumbells....I'm one of them. My research has shown that stabilizer muscles come into play more with dumbells which don't tend to be necessary when barbell benching, and that's why most lift less with dumbells.

I quit doing barbell bench for about a year, concentrating strictly on dumbells (Bob Chicherillo workout) and my push-ups increased by almost 50%, but when I went back to the barbell, I found that max to have decreased.

So there's definitely a give-and-take. WAY off-topic, I know...but I'm bored, so what the hell 🙂

The y only has 125lb dumbells, for a few more weeks anyway. I cannot bench press 315 with a bar.

I didn't want to get into an e-dicklength contest nor did i want to front like i am the hottest sauce safe to pour or anything like that. I was just wondering if there was a gym where heavier benchers tended to congregate at.

There don't seem to be many meets in this part of the usa.. just a few down in minneapolis.

I figured if there was a gym where more serious benchers worked out that I might get the scoop on powerlifting meets in this area.. or maybe set something up locally. This is the midwest and we've got military bases near by, so it should be possible to get a good turnout of respectably strong guys.

if you want to congregate with some power lifters head to one of the college gyms and lift with their football team. those guys spend more time in the weight room than in the classroom.

Tru dat. When I was at NDSU I used to lift with the o-line guys at the BSA, they will work your ass into a coma.

Bench press is usually one of the powerlifts left out, as no one usually has a respectable bench in the local area.

As far as powerlifting comps go, the last one I was going to enter was in November, and would have been at the sports center. Most of the "big" guys go to sports center, or courts plus. They might have changed gyms since i checked last, as they tend to rotate to keep things fresh.I'd stop in and talk to the people at the sports center someone there should know where to send you.

protien. Take protien: about 1 gram per pound of body weight for maintenance, 2 grams for building, and drink lots of water.

Lift heavily for 6months. If you're still at it, then look into a ethel ester creatine. NOXlpode wouldn't hurt at the 6 month mark either.

2g / protein / lb ?

For a 200lb guy, that's a POUND of protein. Is that per day?! 🙂

Everyone's body works a little differently. I've never been much interested in supplements or more "engineered" products. My dad always used to tell me horror stories about lifters that were on roids and all the weird stuff it did to them. That has kind of scared me away from the whole "take this to make you stronger" product space. Personally, my biggest strength holdup is getting to the gym regularly enough, followed by not getting hurt. My elbows are both hurt right now from all of the work we've been doing on our new house so I don't know when i'll hit the gym next. It's been 2 weeks as of today.

I think if someone is a newer lifter the following things are a good start:

1. get enough sleep
2. eat enough meat
3. don't smoke
4. don't drink too much too often
5. get in the gym regularly
6. learn and use the right FORM, even thought you'll have to do less weight. you're supposed to be getting strong, not impressing people

(when someone throws 1 more plate on each side of the bench than they can actually handle, and their jackoff friend in a HOLLISTER t-shirt just deadlifts the bar off them for each rep, they aren't impressing ANYBODY)

I think the biggest mistake most lifters make is overlifting...

Most people seem to forget that muscle is built AFTER you lift. The lifting is the part of your routine that DESTROYS/TEARS the muscles, the "nothing" between lifting days is where you're actually making muscle.

2g of protien per pound of body weight from supplements and your food is really not that much. 3-4 2 scoop shakes plus a normal diet that has eggs/meat/soy/beans will get you there very fast.

'roids is a poorly used term to describe any number of things that people use to get bigger.I think it is misinterpreted and overused. If you don't know whats out there, 'roids is like boost. It means something, but many don't really know what.

Sleep, eat lots to get bigger, eat less to get smaller, lots of protien and water.

Overlifting is the best way to get hurt.
