In about 2000, I was working the front desk at a hotel. A guy came to the front desk in a wheelchair and told me his car ran out of gas and asked if I could borrow him a few bucks. He was adamant that he'd pay me back and when I agreed to give him $10, he even wrote down my name and address and told me he'd send me a check.

So he gets the $10 from me, wheels himself out of the hotel, out of the parking lot and into the restaraunt parking lot next door. He wheels over to a car, gets out of his wheel chair, folds it up, puts it in the back seat, and drives away.

I never got my $10 back and won't ever forget that guy. I haven't given money to anyone I didn't know since. I never will again, either.

this is bullshit, people like that give people like me a bad name / image.

I have a feeling he had other intentions for the money, as many of us would be very kind, thankful and prolly bashful to ask someone for money for gas...

My dad always likes to tell the story when he gave a guy gas money. It was back in the 70s during the fuel crisis when gas was expensive at that time. My dad was filling up his semi truck when a guy approached him, said he didn't have enough gas to make it home to see his kid in the hospital or some guilt trip like that. Promised to pay my dad back just like mentioned above, got my dad's address, etc. My dad was nice enough to do it (I don't think my dad expected cash back). He never got his money.

Fast forward 10-15 years or something like that. My grandpa calls my dad, said he received some mail for my dad, asked my dad if he wanted to forward it or just open it. What do ya know, it was a check from the guy, including a picture of the guy with his son, who actually was in the hospital. Had a little letter with, saying he had lost his address until he was moving and came across the slip of paper with my dad's info. The guy said how grateful he was to my dad, and how he never forgot about it. My dad still has that letter...

Now, this was a long time ago. People have changed, and there's a lot more scum out there then it used to be. My dad said that today, he'd never do it. Times were different back then.

Frankly i would have given him the money..cuz i know what its like..some are very fortunate like it seems all of you.. Yes there is alot of truth to todays society alot of shady people, but i feel every little bit helps. Whatever i cant even talk about this. To each their own. But put yourself in one of the very many million people who struggle everday..Wether or not it was their own fault,or because of the crisis that has hit our economy. But i guess this forum now knows, NOT to help SOME OF the posters above..cuz they dont seem to have problems like this..until they do and look onto one of those people that was in the same pairs of shoes before... karma its a bitch

I've been working at a local homeless shelter for quite some time and I deal with that entitlement on a daily basis. I wouldn't feel guilty at all, nothing angers me more than people who feel they deserve something from me. I'm all for helping people out in need, but people like that are usually the least grateful and give you the most attitude. So I've stopped driving my lexus to work...

Giving money to somebody who is hungry or has kids to feed is one thing, giving money to a guy with a fairly nice looking big truck who just went to the dentist is another thing.

I wouldn't have thought twice about giving $5 to somebody who was actually going to use it to buy food or some shit.

                  @ karma

Yup. I used to volunteer at churches united in Moorhead serving breakfasts and what not. People would complain ALL the time. It was awful, made me not want to do it. Obviously not everyone was that way, but it was a lot more than I expected!

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

Fuck him Jim. I look at it this way... If you can afford the vehicle, you can afford to drive it. If its that hard to keep gas in it or keep it on the road, you shouldnt own it. PERIOD!!! I see that shit all the time here. Someones always trying to play the pity trip. I actually see it way too much.

Once I was in ecuador and on my way home I was dropped off at the airport with zero monies. I forgot about the $20 fee to get out of the country so I had to break down and ask somebody for money. It was the hardest thing to do and the guy shot me down so bad it wasn't even funny.

I think if this guy was giving you attitude then he must not have really needed it. If you really need help in a situation where you need to ask a stranger for money, you aren't happy about it.

I powdercoat. If it can fit in my oven, I can do it cheap.

Hah I've probably seen you here.. And yeah its ridiculous how much they complain, and it does make volunteers feel like shit. I still don't understand that mentality, they get a warm place to live free of charge. Not good enough. Three free meals a day. Still not good enough. Its always more more more, never pleased with any of the help given to them.

But there are also people on the other side of the spectrum who are extremely happy for every ounce of help they can get. Those are the people that I would gladly help.
Sadly there are more of the first type of people.

And I've ate the meals here a lot and for being free they can be pretty damn good 🙂

I was just gonna ask, did you get complaints about the food? We always got to eat whatever was left and honestly it was no different than the breakfast I make at home. It was almost worth it just to volunteer to get the food haha.

The coordinators mentioned that some of the complainers were more or less using it as a defense mechanism as a reaction to their situation because they were ashamed.

                                Nope.

Somehow Jim would hack into the BMW's ecu and reprogram it to run on mod chips.

so if you ran outta gas...in your bmw that means i shouldnt throw you 5 bucks to make it home?

the attitude thing i could understand jim..i do. But if you were to come off to have an attitude but needed to get home or where ever i think i would kick 5 bucks for ya

My guess is if Jim ran outta gas anywhere remotely near a gas station anywhere between here and Mpls he would either have a debit/credit card on him at all times OR he would have a means to make a call and one of his buddies would help him out.

This is pretty much exactly what happens. Makes them feel better about themselves/their situations. Others honestly have nothing better to do than complain, not just about the food.

The only times I've gotten serious complaints is when we have no one to cook a meal and I have to make it.

i wouldnt give money to panhandlers/beggers at all.. fuck em. watch em sit at the end of an off ramp, collect some change, then walk to their car parked at a gas station down the street.

the only time i've ever felt obligated to give a guy money on the street wheen he was asking for it, was in san francisco on the pier..some hippie stoner had a sign that said "need cash for weed".

if i had 5 bucks, i'd of given it to him.

been there and did. i had a better day knowing i helped out someone in need. later i was mad because i could have spent it on a taxi instead of walking around trying to find a sonic but i got over it when i found out the hotel vending machine dispensed actual bags of chips.

moral of the story? be kind and also call information for hours of operation before venturing out on foot for fast food in a questionable neighborhood in california.
