Dump the movie into your computer using the USB. Open windows movie maker and drag-n-drop the video in and then start messing around to see what you can do. It isn't too powerful, so there isn't a whole lot to mess around with.

yeah considering usb1.0 is about 11-12mbps and 2.0 is 480mbps compared to 400mbps of firewire

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

well the computer I have at home is a 'built' computer and doesn't have a slot for a firewire card..... So I guess I am stuck using the USB 1.0.... GREAT!

The computer was built a couple years ago... Does USB2.0 have a different end or look any different than that of 1.0? I guess I will have to buy a new computer to fix this issue haha 🙂 Thanks for the help.... I am not gonna waste a couple hours loading a video onto the computer....

USB2.0 is exactly the same visually...what motherboard/chipset is in it? And what processor?

Umm camera's USB Ports aren't meant for transfering video... they are meant for already digitized stuff like still photos, and things that dont require the bandwidth...

                  Off JVC's Site:
USB PC Link for Video CD Creation, Email Video Clips (MPEG-4 Streaming and MPEG-1 Video Capture), Digital Still Capture

You won't be grabbing anything without a firewire cord off the tape itself... other then already compressed video (like webcam shit) and still photos.

Reguardless of the claimed bandwidth by USB2.0 and Firewire, for file transfer firewire is faster, without getting in to the technical details of it, there are less interruptions then with USB2. Also, manufacters use firewire as the standard for trasnfering video.

Long story short, buy your self a firewire cable becuase you wont be transfering any video without it off your MiniDV tape. Windows Movie Maker will walk you through the rest.

and to clarify, you can buy USB 2.0 and Firewire PCI cards, you won't need to redo the whole PC.

wow I was just in the middle of screwing with this and realized everything Jim said. USB only does digital photos and whatnot from the SD card. I need to upload video clips from a Mini DV tape. I know nothing about this firewire card, or where it goes, but I know I wasn't able to rip ipod stuff because I didn't have the slot for the required card. And I have a firewire cable, but no port for it.... so now what?!? The whole point of buying this stupid camcorder was so I could play with video editing!

go to best buy, office max, home depot, etc and pick up a firewire PCI card...itll be like $30-$40...if you need someone to install it i spose i can do it or im sure more than a few people on here could...its very straightforward...
