are you using the internal amplifier of the deck or are you running an external amp for all of your speakers? If you are using the deck amp it is possible that you are reaching the limits of its amplification power and that is causing it to go to a protection mode of sorts. Also, it is possible that a wire is intermittently grounding out either behind the deck or in the doors/speaker locations. Is it possible that the crossover for the component speakers got wet and that is somehow causing a problem. If it's externally amplified the last couple of scenarios would also apply as would the possibility that an RCA cable has been pinched and is shorting out either against the frame of the car or the center wire is shorting to the outer wire. Give me more information on the setup you have and I will try my best to help you out.

Try a different brand of HU, i've heard bad things about sony/clarion. But if you like it i guess I can't diss it. I think what tjamz said will help fix this problem.

Clarion, IMHO, makes one of the best headunits on the market and has since about 1995 when Ron Black left Alpine to go work for Clarion. Ron Black was THE MAN who made alpine what they were/are today. The 7909 CD player from Alpine was and still is one of the best head units that you could possibly buy. When he went to Clarion he brought his reputation with him and was basically given free reigns to create Clarion Pro Audio. In his time at Clarion he has produced some very decent products that, although may not have the "bells and whistles" of some other brands, are very solid and very clean. Does that mean that there weren't a few glitches along the way? Of course not! But I personally have seen more dead Alpines than Clarions, however I would still go on record as being an Alpine fan.

Realistically, just about everyone makes a good CD player today, some have bad runs w/ certain models, but I assure you that if they truly sucked they wouldn't still be in business. What it comes down to is finding the brand/model that has the features you want. Like priced CD players all tend to have about the same quality w/ similar features (what one has, the other doesn't and vice-versa)

That's not to say that there may not be something wrong w/ his HU. FWIW he emailed me and it sounds like it just started working again on it's own, which leads me to think that there may be a wiring problem or intermittent short somewhere.

yeah i dont konw much bout stereo and wiring. in fact im a complete newbie at it. the head unit i believe is working fine but it might ahve to do with the wiring coming from the car itself not from the head unit. I believe this because my tweeters are not working but my mids are. I dont understand what that may mean.
