In my employee handbook within the first 2 pages it states that anyone can get fired, for any reason, at any time, and without any warning.
We had some lawyers come and talk to us about harassment, and mentioned that you cannot get fired for reporting harassment.
      kinda conflicting?

Oh yeah, i have uniforms too. that i have to pay to get cleaned every week. BUT, the cost is reasonable....

right to work state, no contract for employment; you can be fired for any or no reason, you have no job security. however, if you are fired and you suspect the reason was something unfair, if you: are a male, are overweight, smoke, prefer to walk to work, or like the packers, you can get your ex-employer for something like discrimination. talk to an attorney and they will tell you what's what.
it is correct that you can't be punished for voicing your opinions on how you are treated. got more questions? my aunt has managed restaurants in 3 states, i know most of this stuff

I have a dress code as well, I have to wear dress pants, dress shoes, and a button up/polo shirt for my current employer. Yes, I can get my clothes elsewhere, but I'd rather wear a T shirt and jeans. But its not my choice. like he said, you should be able to write off those expenses come tax time.

not trying to sound like a dick here but....what are the odds of needing to wright something off if you work at olive garden?

Word...If you have problems with that company's rules, don't work for them, go somewhere else.

that same as they are anywhere. if you buy shoes just for work (treadsafes because you work fastfood), you can write it off. buying a laptop because you need it to make sales in the field, write it off. that's why you talk to a tax professional instead of just playing "mad libs" when filing taxes

Pretty good. Lets say you make $8/hour, thats ~$16,000 per year. You're going to be paying something in in taxes (even if you get a refund, you probably won't get a full refund of every penny you put in.) If your expenses are, say $2000 that lowers your taxable income to $14,000 (not including what you get to write of automatically...I think you can write off $7500 automatically...might be higher.) Is it a lot that you get out of it? No, but it is something, it does count against your taxable income which lowers your tax liability at the end of the year and every bit does help.

Again, I don't necessarily agree with the way they went about proposing the change in dress code or whatnot, but they do have a legal right to ask that you dress a certain way whilst representing their organization.

I work there also, it's not the new uniforms that pisses me off but it's the whole piercing and tatoo thing. I talked to a manager tonight about the piercing rule and you are allowed two for each ear(all other piercings are not allowed ). So ear piercings are ok but nothing else.

I've worked there for six yrs., I've came in to cover shifts for them on my only day off multiple times because nobody else could.

Now I'm looking for a new job before this new dress code starts because I am not taking out my piercings for a cooking job when I can get one anywhere.

We shouldn't have to pay for uniforms that are mandatory like our non-slip shoes they made us pay for.

Never work for Darden Restaurants, All of the managers are brainwashed.

the one thing that gets me the most is the removal of piercings and stuff that cant even be seen. If it cant seen who gives a flying fuck?

I think you'll find that the majority of large chain businesses like that will make you remove your piercings, as well as buy a uniform...

I wasnt trying to make people go taxman crazy...I was just trying point out that writing off your uniform which you pay two hundred percent more for probably doesnt justify the price hike...correct me if I am wrong, but just cause you can write it off doesnt mean its free. Yea it counts against taxable income..but its not like you are getting your hundred and fifty bucks back for em.

you are correct there mitch, but if you do your homework about taxes you can get a majority of them back IF you do it the right way and know all of your write offs....every little bit helps.

The other argument that can be made in favor of the restaurant imposing a stricter dress code is that it is a proven fact that when people dress more professionally (including the removal of piercings...visible or not..) they tend to work and act more professionally.
