Hey, so i bought myself a 91 GSX a while back for fairly cheap. She isn't pretty but I think I got a good deal.

Anyhoo, long story short the balance shaft belt broke and took the timing belt (and probably most of my valves) with it. So, time for head work! I want to know if any of you have had good experiences with any machine shops around town.

What im looking for is to have my head cleaned, all parts tested and replaced if needed, tested for any cracks (pressure tested i think thats called), 3 angle valve job, revised lifters, surfaced, and put all back together with assorted seals and whatnot ready to go back on the car. I'd also like to have them look at my pistons for damage and surface the block so i don't have any gasket problems. I wasn't even going 30 when the belt broke so I don't think the pistons should be in that bad of shape.

my alternative that i have found is to buy a rebuilt complete head for around $250-$300 and send in mine as a core, or send my head to clearwater cylinder heads in florida and have them do thier magic for, lets say less than $300, i don't have an estimate from them yet. so im looking for something to get done for around the same price locally. what do you think fargostreet?

old belt im guessing, dunno though, havent had a chance to take a good look at it yet. the shaft may have seized tho. if all goes well during the work there will be no more balance shaft to worry about.

I dont mind berg, they do pretty good work as the machining goes. Could be better at cleaning, but they do all the testing and installation pretty cheap. But the prices you listed are pretty damn good, dont know if many shops can beat that. I believe Quality is the best in town for any engine work. I think that race season might be nearing an end for them so it shouldn't take long for them to get it done.

the prices i listed dont include installation of course. i'd need to do that myself if i go that route. i could do everything myself but it would take me a very long time to dissassemble everything, round up all the parts, plus all the little shit like washers and gaskets and bolts and various other sundry, and i just dont have the time right now. i could half ass it and reuse stuff but i've heard it said that its cheaper to spend the money and get it done right the first time. not to mention, by taking it to a good machine shop to get done i can be assured they will do it right and i will have a running car at the end. theres no warranty on my own labor unfortunatley, and i can't be sure with my little peepers if my pistons are ok or not. ill call around and get some estimates from quality, berg, and sturdevants for sure.

Ya I had quality rebuild an LT1 of mine, and I have had machine work done at Berg. I like both places. I have nothing bad to say about either. For a parts store I have to say I like Berg the best for sure. Cannot say about the other places as I have never dealt with them.

i like quality engine and machine bc they do most things for a reasonable price, however, with this cheaper price it'll also take them a bit longer than many shops in town...but hell, they were gonna clean my (use to have) z6 head, as in everything, for 30-50 bux...so yea, for cheapness id go to them, but as i said, you basically pay more if you want it done sooner, so go elseware if you want it done really soon. my .02

Berg isn't a place too trust with a 4g63, i had a friend that had shit go wrong after they rebuilt his motor.

Yeah Berg and 4G63's are definitely a big no no. How many times has Bobby's motor been out because they fucked up machining it? Sturdevant's has rebuild more DSM heads than any other machine shop in the state I'm sure. They do have really good prices also. I would call them to see how much it would cost. And also if you need help or someone to do the work to get the head off and back on, PM me and I can maybe set you up with something.

just a reminder. you should put the third gen lifters in the head before putting it back together.

no, it'll be a lil while before i can get it done. the head will prolly come off this weekend. i have to finish my brake job (stuck rotor, grr) and fixing the strut/coilover install that the previous owner halfassed. that should be accomplised on saturday and maybe ill pull the head sunday. If anyone who has done it a few times would like to supervise or help im sure we could work out some sort of compensation. i've never done it before personally and could use the assistance.
