Alright, you guys are beginning to compare apples to oranges. First of all, we can all agree that

    Blizzard > Squaresoft (xeleventybillion)

With the giant elephant put in it's place in the corner (WoW), we can get back to discussing Squaresoft games.
Most people that I hear say they love FF7, have never even played FF2, 3, or 5 (most have not played 5, since there was no official US release). Final Fantasy 7 was not terrible, but worse than any of the SNES games. Final Fantasy 8 took all the rules of RPGs and broke them, hoping for a brilliant game. Instead, they quite possibly have the worst RPG ever created. Chrono Cross is interesting, but seems to be lacking as far as objectives, and can get as monotonus as Breath of Fire IV in places (spend about 2 hours fighting the same group of enemies on the same terrain with the same characters, etc..).
As far as Squaresoft is concerned, the best game they ever released was....
Chrono Trigger. There is no debate about this. If you are too young to remember pre-ordering your Super Ninendo Entertainment System, then your opinion simply does not count. Chrono Trigger was and remains the best console RPG ever released, much to the chagrin of Lunar fans (another great RPG forgotten to time...). This is a widely agreed upon FACT. There is no room for debate here.

    The only question is...
Will Squaresoft ever hire someone like that guy who did Chrono Trigger, FF2. FF3, etc? I forget his name, but he only designed the games for the SNES platform, he did not actively participate in the psx games. That is why the feel of the games is so different, it is not just because of a platform jump
Really it does not matter, because console RPGs are quickly being rendered obsolete (quiet down in the corner there, elephant!).

If you are a Final Fantasy 7 fanboi, then I suggest you try some of the classics, back when console RPGs were actually fun to play. I did indeed play FF7. This is what happened:

I got these big materia things, that had every spell or whatever. I also got the elusive gold chocobo. I did NOT beat Ruby weapon, but I beat the Emerald one.
I did everything in the game, and got to the final guy or whatever, Sephiroth. On one of my characters, I had a "knights of the round" materia linked with a "quad-magic" materia. The next character in line had a "mime" materia. If you know FF7 at all, you probably see what I am going to say next. Follows is over 5 minutes of sitting there, watching a ridiculous spell, full of eye candy but lackluster in relevance to the game. I hit the power button, took the game out and put it in it's case, and that is where it has stayed since. This was in what, 1997? I might add that FF7 followed the alarming trend of FF3 of not having clear cut character classes.

Try Final Fantasy2, Final Fantasy3, and most of all, Chrono Trigger! Don't have an snes? no problem:

      Did Kefka kill his creator?
depends on what you mean by that. killing a parent and killing an omni______ "being" are totally different. and if god is merely a construct of humanity, then causing all people to stop believing in the existence of god is killing god.
(if i remember correctly) kefka declared himself to be god. sephiroth wanted to rule over all, kefka just wanted to kill everyone and everything, period. kefka took joy in bringing destruction to everything, that is the ultimate evil.

The thing I dont like about XBOX is the lack of RPG's it is analogous to Civic's with no torque.

Fable was the closest thing they had to a good RPG but it was not very long at all. I will have to say that Elder Scrolls is the only thing it seems they have going for them in the RPG realm.

Knights of the Old Republic if you like Star Wars. The first was game of the year when it came out. One of my favorite games ever.

Squaresoft > Blizzard, I would agree on that... but not the other. 😄

Personally I like Working Designs. Lunar I, Lunar II and Vay for the Sega CD. Popful Mail was also pretty neat, but that was more action-rpg. The remade Lunar's for PS1 were not nearly as good as the originals for the Sega CD.

I also enjoy the Dragon Quest series even though the U.S. only had 5 total releases... 1,2,3,4, and 7 on the PS1.

speaking of fps.... i suppose i should start letting people know about lan parties this year?
from what i've seen, the new enemy territory looks stunning.
this year, i'm hoping to seperate teams, one in the house and one in the garage.
by the way, we don't only play fps at the lan parties, they just offer the most excitement for the greatest number of players... however, we are always willing to implement new games if we can all play them

I see that you can buy FF 1, 2, and 3 now for Playstation so I think I am going to look into picking those up. I have played RPG's for quite some time now. I started playing them before I went to school.

I really liked Final Fantasy VII and didn't care much for the games that came afterwards. I really hated FF VIII and FF IX was OK and FF X was not too bad. I won't mention FF x-2. I couldn't stand playing FF Tactics because of the fighting system.

I remember the SNES RPG games like Chrono Trigger and Earthbound. Chrono Trigger is also one of my favorite games right behind FF VII. I am just hoping that FF XII will be decent also but I won't hold my breath.

Has anyone tried playing Radiata Stories? I have it now in my GameQ from gamefly and I am wondering if I should play it? Or can you suggest any other titles for PS2?

                        Bad93ex:

You should really give Tactics another try. Most people I know that picked up that game tried it right away, and got a little ways through it and absolutely hated it. So on the CD shelf it went, collecting dust. Later on, they would be looking for a game to play, and perhaps pick up Tactics to try it again because of lack of better things to play. After trying it the second time, they absolutely loved the game. It worked the same way for me, too. Once you get the feel for the battle system, it is a brilliant game, and very fun to play. Expect to put in about 80 hours if you want to explore the entire game.

As far as newer stuff, I have to admit, I did like FF9 to a point. It brought back the 4 party system, and also, the biggest thing, is brought back CHARACTER CLASSES, something that should never have disappeared in the first place. However, I stopped playing it. Why? Because of the damnable chocobo hunt. I decided I was going to try for some of the rare hard to get items in the game, and I put in far more time than I thought necessary to make any headway in the chocobo thing, relying soley on luck. Screw that, far too much effort, I just stopped playing. Maybe I will pick it up again for a 2nd run again someday, but I have to admit, it was a turn for the better.
