Just brought it home to today. Click on my webshots link and grand am. Pictures were taken from seller. About a month ago when I bought it.
Sounds like a fun project car! What are your plans with it? Too bad it's an auto but older turbo cars always get a thumbs up

thats stock? Crazy. Never heard of a stock GA turbo.
-
Yeah GM actually had some turbo cars. Very rare though.
-
yup GM did some turbos in the late 80's.
sunbird, GA, GP. the TGP (turbo gran prix) is a 3.1 v6, only available in 89 and 90. black or red were the exterior color choices, tan or black leather interior, sunroof was an option, hood vents on hood to help get rid of heat. they were intercooled as well. low 14's stock. they did the 2dr and 4 dr. the 4dr was maroon or white i believe it was called an STE or TSTE.
i believe the quad 4 was a 2liter.Monty
edit for production numbers. the TGP production was about 1500 total i think for the two years. been awhile since i have been a regular visitor at w-body.com or clubgp.com or any of the other GM W-body sites.

Intake, exhaust, intercooler. Its a 2.0 ohc inline 4. Kinda like a baby dsm. I wish it was DOHC. I paid $256 so I have room for mods. It runs and drives.
Once I get plates for it. One of the local shops will get it for a tune up.

Do you have a TGP? Dont see many tgp owners up where I live.

TGPs went low 15s to low 16s stock...they varied a lot...also quad 4 HO's were 2.3liters...
I seen one or two people go into a very high 14 stock like 14.9 on w-body.com. Its possible if you beat the shit out of it. But most will run 15.5 on a average.
Also they had a quad 4 ho turbo. Pace car 250 made most of them got recalled! That put out like 250hp!

i do not have a TGP. wished i did though.
just learned a bit about them as i was learning about my car at the various w-body forums and sites.Monty

i was going to buy a recked tgp and turbo my old grand prix then my fun was spoiled cause of the differant heads, and i did want to spend much.I was going to do the same thing. The 3.1NA and 3.1 Turbo are different engines. I also learned that the automatics trannys were weaker in the NA. So matching a turbo engine with a NA tranny wasnt a good idea.
Keep looking for a tgp. I had a fwd turbo 1g dsm. My tgp is 100x better and your being different then other people!

the motors arent really much difference...youd be surprised...there has been A LOT of discussion about the differences of the motors/blocks but people cant really figure out what it is...i know the VIN is a different code but a lot of parts are exactly the same and the turbo parts will bolt up to any 2.8/3.1mpfi....the turbo tranny will bolt right up to any of the 60degree V6's found in the W's....a lot of people do 282/284(parts are like non-existent for these but they are a little stronger) 5spd swaps...
edit: and anyway you look at it, the FWD auto tranny from GM is gonna pretty much suck for power applications...the 3.4dohc was supposed to make 300hp when it came out but GM couldnt make an auto tranny to hold that so it was detuned to 210hp...

It be cool if someone could make a turbo kit for the 3.1NA.

The VIN has a T in it. I read about the 5 speed swap. Something I would do if I could find a car with a 5 speed. I think theres people running 300hp on the stock automatic trans with a tranny cooler. Probably not a daily driven car.
I think if you were to drive it around every day. Upgrading the tranny is a most. Unless you have a 5 speed.

as for being different...not a problem here.
no desire for a DSM.
i am really wanting an L67 powered ride. be it GP GTP, Regal GS, Cutlass or something else with it transplanted. just something about that engine that gets me off.
over at clubgp.com there is a semi new thread about the first 9second 3800.
anyways
not a problem with me being different.
that DOHC is a beast, though it is not fun or easy to work on.
there are a few guys who have done custom headers on them.
as was said there are issues with the trannies holding up with power.
then again there are not many options for making power with the 60 degree v6.Monty
