"E85" New type of Gas?
-
I have heard a commercial on the radio a few time for a gas called "E85". Supposed to be a 85% Ethanol 15% gas mix. 105 octane rating. Anyone else heard or know anymore about it? Said at Cenex stores you can find out more info, but I have not run by there yet. Thats a great octane rating but will running that much Ethanol have ill effects? Not sure of the price either.

IN A CARBURETED car it acts like it's adjusted lean. A feul injected car would correct with the oxygen sensors and just run richer. Other than that I know of nothing wrong with it FOR A LATE MODEL.
Alcohol has about 1/2 the BTUs of energy that gasoline has. This means that for every 2% of alk, you lose 1% gas mileage.

So that basicly means, if you have fuel injection you can run it. But your gas mileage will suck ass?

For carbs you could maybe get by jetting way richer; for EFI you would need bigger injectors, higher fuel pressure, and/or a new fuel map. I'm pretty sure the stock O2 sensor wouldn't compensate enough by itself.
The stoich A/F ratio for E85 is about 10:1 while gas is 14.7:1. So even though E85 is quite a bit cheaper, you're gonna get worse mileage with the E85 (maybe around 30% less mpg).
There aren't many E85 dealers around here. There are a few places in MN now, but not many in ND. It might catch on in the future though with this whole Iraq deal. The E85 prices should stay more stable than gasoline because it's made mostly from domestic corn, not imported oil.
