What are these symptoms of? (head/headgasket/?)

A family friend offered to give us their 96 Lumina and the way my car was handling today on this snow i KNOW i need a winter car. Got curb rash on 2 of my new rims damnit. Anyways...the catch to getting this lumina for free is that he says that their kids ran it with no or low coolant and now it sounds like it burns coolant. He said its either a warped head or blown gasket. What do you guys think it would be more liklely to be? This is all i know: It runs (battery is dead) and coolant is in the exhaust but it hasnt gotten into the oil or contaminated the oil. Obviously its mixing or burning somewhere, and i think it sounds like the gasket. WHat do you guys think? Is it worth it to get it and try fix it or could something a lot more spendy be the problem?

ok i just wrote a big long post about it but wtf the page didnt load and i lost it...if the car was driven a long time with the gasket blown the heads will be warped...now that can be as simple as a resurface...in auto we had this same problem with a friends 3100...we rebuilt the whole top end of the motor...parts are cheap for 3100s and easy to find since they came in a ton of cars...and while you at it you can upgrade the topend to 3400 parts for about the same price since youll have it apart...

An price estimates?
Right know i just want a DD for winter driving because it's only a matter of time before i crash the mustang. Not joking today i drove froma friends house back home after the early-ass shopping and "foreward" was actually about my passenger side mirror. 90% of the time my car was at a 45degree angle to the direction i was actually traveling, i had NO cornering capability at all and that is not an exaggeration, id have to rev it and hit corners drifter style so i was facing the new angle otherwise my car would have gotten stuck in the middle of an intersection. Right now i just need a POS that runs for as little ass possible and has FWD, AWD, or 4WD and this hopefully will fit the bill. If not im gunna start calling people in the classifieds. -
ok, i can garrentee that it has a blown head gasket or two. Just hope that the heads aren't shot (damnit being the only major con of having aluminum heads). Anyways. If you really want to get it fixed, my buddy and I can fix it for you at his shop in west fargo. Dont quote me exactly on this, but your going to be looking in the $1200 range to repair, which includes removal of the heads and having them sent out for machining and seals replaced in it, intake gaskets, along with other things that are involved. Just let me know if you want more of an exact estimate. pm me these options:
Year, and Model (include LS, Z, or anything else)
Engine size
VinIll get you a better quote then.

thanks for the offer ryan but this is just for a winter car. Theres no way in hell id spend that sort of money on a POS car that i plan on driving into a wall someday haha. Ill just call some people who have cars that already run. Tony if you really want a car to work on i can give you their number. They are willing to just GIVE me the car so yeah....maybe thats just because we are family friends though.

ya, its a huge job to do, approx 13 hours of work total, if any car is questionable on repairs like this, it is probably best just to sell it as a machanics dream car, or scrap it. The only thing that is at risk for being damaged is the engine itself, if it isn't already being ruined from the coolant entering the cylinders. Good luck in finding a car!
