directx was developed by microsoft, there are plenty of distributable versions of it however it is harder to find beta versions w/o going direct to microsoft. I like to have the beta version as I try to beta test 2-4 games per year and many require that you have the beta versions.
.net was needed only for use of an auto mapping interface used in EQ2.

you need to download service pack 2 (from someplace other than microsoft....do a search, its out there) before you can get around the validation tool and get the "Manage Add-ins" screen
