Machine Shop Work

Can't speak for M&J, but I know a LOT of the import crowd has been happy with Brian @ Sturdevants.

hey does anyone know how much it cost to have a block honed and have pistons installed in a motor at a machine shop..I bought a motor from torbs and he said it would run and everything...well i had the motor torn apart and the pistons are fucked so once again i got screwed over.
Anyone know how much a machine shop would charge to put in some pistons and hone a block then?
if the pistons are fucked, theres a good chance that there is more fucked up inside the motor... better to just bring everything in and have it checked over, then have to tear it apart again...

Just to clarify this whole mess everybody, I'm going to explain what happend. Mods, please don't delete this or somthing because this is what's been happening. I approached John about buying my laser. The timing belt had jumped, so, knowing that I automatically supposed that the valves were bent and that was all I believed was wrong. It's a DSM thing. Timing belt go bye bye and boom, bent valves. I've talked to some very experieced DSM mechanics, and they've never seen a turbo'd motor have what this has. I havn't seen it myself yet, but I'm told there's a hole in one of the pistons and metal shavings in the others. How the hell a timing belt would do that I have no clue because that's honest to God what happened. I was just drving the car, down shifted, motor revved to about 3500 and everything just stopped. I got home and checked the timing. It was off. So, I reset it to correct timing, turned it over, and no compression. So this is still telling me valves. This is what I told John, "The motor should run, there's no reason why it shouldn't" with a good set of valves. The DSM mechanic I talked to has been running DSM's for over 10 years, and was one of the first to hit 11's on a 14b, so trust me, he knows what he's talking about. He's never seen a turbo'd motor have a valve puncture the piston in all his years on a turbo'd car. However, he has seen it happen on n/a cars due to the higher compression. The bottom line is this, John bought a non-running car that was 15 years old and a DSM to top it all off. Now, he expects me to pay out of my own pocket for machine work? In my book, a non-running car is sold AS-IS with no warranty expressed, written, or implied. Just because I felt bad though, I offered him a good set of 1g rods/pistons/rings over the phone. (These conversations happend late Friday night) He then proceeded to harass me about how "he better have all his money back on monday or the motor rebuilt by monday or else"...and then his friend called me on John's phone later saying "You fuck somebody, you're gonna get fucked...(hung up)" Now, when somebody threatens you, do you really wanna help them out? I was being nice by offerhing the rods/pistons/rings I thought because by law I don't have to do shit. All I told him about the car was what I knew, and knowing what I knew, he bought the car. I didn't garantee him the motor would run as I had not takin the old head off myself. I'll quote what I told him again "There's no reason why it shouldn't run". It doesn't say "it will run" or I garantee it will run"...It was just a common DSM knowledge answer to a timing belt slipping or breaking. So John, here's my offer to you, you can have the rods/pistons/rings I had offered to you prior. I don't have any cash to give you, nor would I give you any to begin with because of the way you and your friend treated me on the phone and because I don't have to give you any. It's no my fault that you decided to buy a non-running car so quit blamming me for everything. I told you what I knew, and knowing that you bought it AS-IS. Enough said.

Not to talk shit or anything, but putting a valve through a piston is fairly common on ANY car that is beaten. It happens quite frequently when someone accidentally mis-shifts and the car revs up to 10,000+. Generally when this happens the valves go through the pistons and end up looking like a bunch of flattened quarters sitting in the oil pan. It doesn't matter if the car is n/a or forced induction. I'm not saying that it happens every time someone mis-shifts, but it does happen.

I have personally never seen a valve ruin a piston in a DSM due to a broken or slipped timing belt in my time. That isn't saying that it can't happen, but just my experience. From my experience, the valves have just left a little mark in the piston and the valve is bent to shit.

so did sturdavents go out of business or no?

Not to be a dick here, but didn't Jon get perma banned?

pI've stopped trying to keep track of everybody that re-signs up becuase its nearly impossible to try and keep track of them all.

I agree 110% with Jim on this one. Its nothing against you personally Jon, its just that you seem to consistently break the rules set forth by this website. Lately you have been decent, which is why I have never bothered to re-ban you even though by rights I should, as I have banned others that have come back and/or used someone elses account (example: Adam Drake)

okay so i mightve said whatever dumb shit in the past to back myself up...
not really sure what you two are talking about on how i acted in the past but if its about the theft thing....i've been to court 3 times for it...and the charges are pretty much dropped against me.And the only rule i've broke on this website is rejoining. I think anyway from my knowledge.
Anyways, thanks for letting me stay on the website, if you do decide to reban me then so be it.

BTW torbs, whenever the valves hit the piston, i dont care what car it is in, it will fuck up the pistons also. And the vlave didnt PUNCTURE the piston, the head of the valve broke off and just fucked that pisotn up more that the others. I looked at it when i was at the shop. It doesnt matter how low the compression is, but if the valves get bent, they hit the pistons, if they hit the pistons the pistons are fucked.

well this time...it did get all fuckedup......probably just my luck....
oh and sturdavents did go out of business i called them today and friday was thier last day.
