With a v8 or even a 6cyl, I would go with a powerglide. But with only a 2.0 4cyl. I think that a three speed would better suit his needs. Alot better chance of being in the powerband all be it one extra shift. But it's alot less to worry about than the 5 speed he's used to. And no more missed shifts.

As long as he gets the converter right, it will be fine with 2 speeds. My car never goes below 7000rpm the whole pass at the strip, so there is no worry about falling out of the powerband.

                  First:

The main reason most draggers use the powerglide is because it's lightweight, and the fact it takes very little power to turn. The TH350 while being 3 speeds, takes a considerable more power to operate and weighs over 100lbs more. The TH400 is a VERY heavy transmission and takes even more power to turn.

Buschur uses the powerglide in both his old back half and tube car. He also runs it in his Conquest racers. Bill Walls, Aaron Poe, etc. Many of the Supra guys run a powerglide too. Venom, Titan, Paul Efantes, etc.

but the th400 is a very very strong transmission also. thats why its almost worth running it.

I agree with the fact that the powerglide robs ahelluva lot less power. But as far as weight goes, Theres only about 25lbs difference between the th350 and powerglide. plus usually, and I mean USUALLY, the turbo 350's are cheaper to build. I personally like the idea of shifting only once and like them both. As far as a th400, Well the cost too much to buy and build compared to the other two. They are very tough out of the box but do rob alot of power. Like 45hp in stock form. Given building it up will make that number decrease but a th350 usually robs between 25-35hp in stock form and the good ol shlushbox er, uh, powerglide robs even less. So if you do themath it's a no brainer. But I think kevins a cheap ass. JK!

How much more does this tranny weigh compare to the stock AWD transmission?

If I were to guess, I'd say about 75lbs. Now that's just a guess. Ive never lifted an awd trans but I have a fwd. The auto is alot heavier. But a small price to pay.

I weighed them side by side, no fluid and no converter. The glide was 101.5lb, the TH350 was 139.5lb.

Dave just breaks trannys so he has a bunch laying around.

I'd really be interested in knowing how much my auto trans weighs, all I know is I can lift it and set it down a few feet away but that takes almost everything I have in me.
