In my past I was DEEPLY in to body modification, I am still interested in the culture and I am still in to it, but I'm not nearly as deep in to it as I used to be. I am a member of iam.bme and I know a LOT of the people that are in the more extreme pictures on that site.
As for the implants they are nothing new by any means and they won't become mainstream like tattoos/piercings have.
They are a surgical procedure where the area is cut open with a scalpel and a "pocket" is created. If the pocket is too small there will painful tearing, if it is too big then the implant will float freely in the area and won't turn out the way the client wants it. The implant is slid into place and the area is stitched shut. The problem with these subdermal implants is the possible negative effect on nerve and muscle tissue. There is something putting pressure on them that isn't supposed to be. A lot of the subdermal implants are poorly thought out and poorly placed and, yes, a lot of them are removed due to damage caused by them.
If you are truely interested in this kind of stuff then ask me anything, if I don't know the answer I definately know where to find it.

Interesting fact as long as we are on this subject. Anesthetic is illegal to own or use unless you are a doctorr. Yes, there are ways of getting it, but, because of the mindset of a lot of the people in the body modification culture about 80% of the implant pictures (or other "surgical" procedures you see on BME) were done with a clear mind and no anesthetic.
