Well I have been thinking about getting a bike for sometime now and I had a couple questions about them...

    1. What would insurance run for a 17 year old?(I know it depends on the bike)
    2. What would a good bike be to start off on?

    THanks for your help!!

Do you have experience riding a motorcycle? If not, I would be inclined to say that Methodless's idea for a bike is a good starting point. Sportbikes can be a bit overwhelming if you haven't ridden much before and can be a bit powerful to learn on. Having said that, an older 500 or 600cc bike isn't a bad choice to learn with. If you dump it at least you won't be out as much $$$

i would recomend an old kawasaki 250 you can pick them up for around $500-1000 and are plenty fast for what you will need to learn on... plus they resell great as there are always beginers looking to pick up a cheap bike they can tip over and not be to pissed...

oh and a lil tip you will
1: drop it your first time taking off from a roll( depending on your ego)
2: drop it around a corner on gravel( ppl that know will tell you this but you will not listen)
3: will be standing with it or pushing it and drop it over...

trust me it will happen at least once

I was serious about the dirt bike because you can learn how to handle turning without worrying about dumping. The 250 ninja would be a great idea, you buy one, ride it a summer and sell it next summer for $50 less than you paid. It's always a garaunteed sell. 600's are big if you've never ridden a sport bike. I would start smaller or buy an upright.

I had a Suzuki GS425 that I learned on up north. That would be a good bike to pick up. Granted if you can find one that is in decent condition...Not exactly the most appealing of bikes, but it's still a good beginner bike.
